Recently, the antivirus software that I have running on my machine (Toshiba Satellite, Win XP sp1) missed some malicious software that caused me some trouble. I followed the basic instructions found here and other places, and there is no longer any sign of the malware (that I can find with Ad-Aware, XoftSpy, AVG Free Edition, etc).
However, as the last of the infection went away, I lost my ability to use Windows Explorer. The machine would boot and "freeze" on a blank desktop (correct image, but no icons, taskbar, start button, etc.). I was able to access my harddrive through the task manager (to get to cmd.exe). The error message that I got was "Access denied", when using cmd.exe to call it. When booted in safe mode (which I am currently using), the machine has full functionality. The desktop icons are present, and explorer.exe works without issue. After a couple of other re-boots into normal mode, I am no longer able to access even the task manager.
I am not quite sure where to go from here, but a system restore is a LAST RESORT (too much of my dissertation is on this machine!). Below is the latest log from HijackThis.
