I have run all steps in the instructions on top of running Spysweeper.

I am using Firefox as my broser.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder


Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

I ran CWShredder again, in safe mode. It did not find any CWS files. It did say that it restored a home page, but found no infections. This one must be really hidden.

Hello, you can skip the part where asked to download CWShredder, otherwise follow to the tee.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.

Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster

• Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
• Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
• Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
• Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
• If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
• Now close About:Buster

Update CWShredder

• Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
• Click Check For Update
• Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:

• Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
• Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
• It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
• When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
• Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

After running Buster, Shredder & Clean up, I received the following message from SpySweeper:
There is a conflict on your computer between SpySweeper and another software program (possibly a threat) Some shields within SpySweeper have been disabled in order to prevent a larger conflict. To imporve the situation, follow these steps:
Run A sweep (nothing found)
Go to Shields
Turn on Spy Instalation shield and IE hijack shield.

I have done all this.

I ran the Kaspersky on line scan. If found 5 viruses in ten files, but these appear to be ones that Norton found and quarantined.

I took a look at the last Hijack This Log and see that the CWS file is still with me. I ran Spy Sweeper after rebooting and it confirmed the presence of the CWS_NS3. It also found the ATWOLA cookie.

Let me know what to delete in the Hijack This log.

This is a persistant little CWS. It will not delete. If I run Hijack this immediately after deleting it, it is stil there.

I have tried running Hijack This in Safe Mode. It goes away, but as soon as I come back into Windows, it's right back!

Is there any way of removing this manually in the Registry?

What does this CWS file watch? Any idea where it came from?

Hello, you definately have a stubborn variant let's do a slightly different approach. Be sure you update all programs before proceeding and keep all browsers closed.


You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.

• Prepare CWShredder for use:
  • Download CWShredder.
  • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
  • Please do not do anything with it yet.
• Prepare AboutBuster for use:
  • Download AboutBuster.
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
  • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
• Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
  • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
  • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
  • Please do not do anything with it yet.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.

• Run CWShredder:
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
• Remove the offending service:
  • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
  • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
• Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
  • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click OK at the directions prompt.
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
• Clean out temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
• Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
• Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
  • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
  • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
  • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
  • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
  • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
  • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
  • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
  • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
  • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
  • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
  • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
• Prepare your reply:
  • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
  • Please post the AboutBuster log.
  • Please note any complications you had.

As you can see, it's still with me. CWShredder finds no evidence of any bad files. TrendMicro found nothing. Spy Sweeper finds it everytime, cleans it, but it comes right back.
