:tazz: too cute to resist that little emoticon....

Anyhoo, for weeks now i've been getting the same two annoying messages popping up on my computer.... one is when i start it up :" Error loading C:program files\wild tangent\...dll" in seeing the hijack this logfile i notice that thing... and am guessing that'll be one i remove.

The other problem is more frequent.... probably 20 times/day i get this message. it comes up in the AVG REsident Shield window and says "trojan horse downloader.Tsupdate.I is found in file C:\System Volume Information\_restore-{608E1125-7C4E-4A53-83A4-11D9449703F0}-\RP193\A0016913.exe To remove this virus, run AVG for windows.

But i've run AVG (with updated database) every day and it's found nothing.

the steps i've taken so far:
a- delete all offline files. cookies, etc.
1- Run Ad-Aware. Reboot.
2- Run trend micro's HouseCall... nothing found. reboot.
3- Run AVG. Nothing.
4- Run a trojan scan from moosoft. Nothing.
5 - Run The Cleaner software. Nothing.
6- Rebooted this morning... my DOS prompt came up and went freaky with all these virus names this morning. guess it's something i installed.
7- Ran HiJack This... files below.

i want to THANK YOU for your time... i know things are busy this time of year. THANKS THANKS THANKS!! --- gretchen

Hello, gretchen28, welcome to GeeksToGo :tazz:

The trojan AVG is finding is in the system restore folder.

Sometimes, when a PC is infected a copy of the file is backed up in your System Restore. By default, Windows prevents System Restore from being modified by outside programs, which includes your AntiVirus program.

One of the best features of Windows ME is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

Disabling System Restore does not delete or remove any of your personal data from your computer. The only files removed are those that System Restore created in the _RESTORE folder, the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore:
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click on the Performance tab.
Click on the File System button.
Click on the Troubleshooting tab.
Put a check mark next to 'Disable System Restore'.
2. Reboot.
Repeat the process, but this time, remove the check mark next to 'Disable System Restore'.

Run HijackThis, hit 'Do a System Scan Only', and place a check by these lines

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapp...://my.yahoo.com
(This isn't malware, but sets a tracking cookie when you start Internet Explorer)

R3 - URLSearchHook: URLSearchHook Class - {37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - C:\Program Files\nzsearch\nzsearchenh.dll

Hit 'Fix Checked'.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files/folders in bold (if found):

C:\Program Files\Common Files\tsa <--This folder in bold
C:\Program Files\nzsearch <--This folder in bold
C:\Program Files\WildTangent <--This folder in bold
C:\WINDOWS\wxojobcp.exe <--This file in bold

Reboot. Run HijackThis, hit 'Do a System Scan and Save the Log', and post the log here, along with any other problems you may have.

Joey--

thank you so much! things seem to be going so much better... i followed your directions to the letter and came up with the following logfile. i just can't thank you enough. really... truly, thanks!

i do have one little question further, though.... i always use firefox, yet i still got infected. any other steps i can take to protect myself? i am running AVG antivirus, but also EZ Trust Antivirus that came with my DSL software. should i remove one of those? if so, which one do you recommend? my computer friends say i should get a router for extra protection. does that help?

AGAIN, :tazz: i thank you for taking your valuable time and energy to help a total stranger. thanks Joey!

;) gretchen

Clean now, good job! :tazz:

Yes, only use one antivirus and keep it updated. I recommend you keep AVG, but if you like eTrust better, you can keep that one instead.

There are a few optional ones, which could be fixed safely to make your computer boot faster:
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime<<<System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer. Can be started manually when you need to use it.
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background<<<MSN Messenger utility. If you don't use MSN Messenger, this can be annoying. Can be started manually. To permanently disable it, go to MS Messenger>Tools>Options>Preferences and uncheck "Run this program when Windows starts".
To prevent reinfection, I recommend you do the following:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
4. Repeat steps 1 - 3, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore'

Go to Windows Update to get the latest security patches for windows.
If you have Microsoft Office, update it here.

For some recommended anti-spyware programs and tutorials on using them, go here: http://groups.msn.co...ermeasures.msnw
Be careful with spyware "removers and scanners"-- there are many "rogue/suspect" programs that "claim to remove" spyware : http://spywarewarrio...nti-spyware.htm

You should also clean out temp folders to increase disk space: http://forums.tomcoy...showtopic=23832

I notice you don't have a firewall. A good (free) one is Zonealarm: http://majorgeeks.com/download388.html

Another tip to stay clean is to watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with crapware. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, Does the program you want come bundled with other "3rd party" programs? What do the 3rd party programs do? Will they deliver ads? Track your surfing habits? You may be installing more than you think, Read the EULA agreement, you know that paragraph of stuff you "agree to" before the software installs? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Be careful what you download from file sharing networks. If you are not sure, scan it with your Antivirus app. A small file (in KB) is probably not what you think it is.

A good article which shows how to prevent re-infection: Prevent Hijackings

Hi,

I also seem to have this trojan that AVG cleans out but it keeps coming back. I did a Google search for it -Downloader.Tsupdate. This web site and thread was in the Google results so I registered.

I donwloaded Hijack This and also printed out the instructions you provided the original poster. I have Windows XP.

Currently, Zone Alarm is asking me if the virus can access the net. The program name is <expd1.exe>. I've just been telling it "no". But I haven't done anything else.

I picked up the program at an ethnic web site that provided a list of translations of phrases. I thought that the download would be safe since it appeared to be a program for sound and I believe that it was going to allow sound for pronunciations of the foreign words.

Can I also use your instructions to clear out this virus? I won't do anything until I hear back. Everything seems to be fine with my computer so far.

Thanks,
Eleny
