Welcome to G2G,

If your computer is functioning fine other than the .gif files not opening.

Open My Computer , click on tools/folder options.. then click on file types, scroll down to .gif

under details for 'gif' what does it say?

It should say..."Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"....if it doesn't click change and select (whatever webbrowser you are using) that from list.

Hi elmoscookie...Welcome to G2G!

Click on Start then Control Panel and double click Internet Options...under the "Advanced" tab, scroll down the list and under the Multimedia section, make sure that Play animations in web pages is checked.

Also just because it is in the *.GIF format it does not always mean that it is animated......

Maybe it would help if you told us exactly how you made your gif, how you uploaded it and what software you are using to make web pages. A link to the image might give us more clues, too.
