Hi All, hope you can help.
Have a HP Pavillion Laptop with XP Pro SP2.

When booting, it gets to the point where I normally choose my profile and login, but appart from the XP logo, there is Nothing to click on. Right click does no good either.
I get the same thing in Safe Mode. Blue screen with XP logo.
Have tried Last good known config. Made no difference.
The CRTL-ALT-DEL x 2 thing does not work either.
The only CD I have is the Recovery CD which will overwrite all files on the HDD. Not an option at this point.

Does anyone know how to fix this please? :tazz:

Thanks

Hi w0mbatinoz...Welcome to G2G!

Try this for starters...

Click Start then Run and type chkdsk /f (Note the space before /f) and click "OK". This procedure is going to want to run on reboot so go ahead and type Y and press "Enter" Reboot your machine. This might take a while depending on what it finds...Do Not interupt this operation!

I'm pretty sure with HP recovery CD's that you can choose a non-destructive recovery which will only redo the windows operating system files, leaving your programs and settings and files intact.

Hi Fenor,

I have not seen that option. Got so far booting with the HP disk and did not want to go any further for fear of loosing data.

Will have another look!

w0mbatinoz...

Try booting into "Safe Mode with command prompt". Tap the F8 key as the machine is booting and when you get the Options Screen, choose "Safe Mode with command prompt". At the command prompt type chkdsk /f (Note the space before /f), press "Enter", and at the next screen...type Y and reboot.

When the scan is complete, post back with the results.

EEerrrg.

Ok, F8. Safe mode with command prompt chosen.
I get the safe mode text in the 4 corners, and the detail up the top RE XP SP2 ETC with a black background and then it goes to the same blue weclome type screen with the XP logo and nothing else to click on.

Not what I expected.

What now? :tazz:

Not what I expected, either. Try pressing the Windows start key (between Ctrl and Alt)...if that doesn't work, try Ctrl + Alt + Del ...if you get the task manager, type the command and press "Ok"....

Don't give up yet!!!!

Try this....REPAIR your installation of XP. This procedure will not damage or change your current files or settings...it will just repair or replace damaged system files. You will be asked for your Installation CD and may be asked for your product key. Follow the instructions carefully...print them out if you can.

WoooooHoOoooooo.
Having the right disk sure helped. There was no way I could have done that with the HP recovery CD.
Thanks Wannab1.
All is well, and installing SP2 now.

Cheers!!!!
