.exe files changing to .lnk files

hi guys. this is not the first time this has happened to my computer. but the last time around i forgot about it. now it's back to huant me :)

i can run any .exe files; windows just keeps asking me to search for it on the internet.. but IE is an exe file :)

i tried downloading the winsock program, but it too is an exe file :tazz:

please advise.
