improper shut down

when i start the computer it goes to boot and when the windows screen apears it goes to gray screen and the mesage apear that the computer was shot down improper. and when i try to start it in safe mode it reboots and it end up with the grey screen again. i'm running windows xp pro. i hope i explain it ok. thanks.
