I was recently guided through the steps to remove malware in this forum, but a new problem emerged once I was clean.

I suddenly began to lose hard drive space, and all too rapidly. I posted the issue at http://www.geekstogo...=0, but no clues yet as to the problem.

It was then suggested I post a HiJackThis log to see if any of you can spot something. See below.

In the meantime, my hard disc has gone from 19.5 GB free space on Sunday night to 15.7 GB Monday evening . . . HEEELLLLPPP!! :tazz:

UPDATE:

I've been monitoring the demise of disk space for the last few days, and must add that I've probably only added about 200 mbs of stuff during the same period.

Sept 12

16.3
15.7
14.8

Sept 13

Sept 17

Oddly enough it even went up slightly a couple of times. :)

Any guidance would be very much appreciated. I deleted 20 gigs worth last week, but that is almost gone now! :tazz:

Thank you.

Hello PhotoBoy and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a few strange entries in your log. If I hadn’t seen your location, I would have thought that it was Birmingham, England, based upon your trusted zone entries and proxy server.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Thanks COB!

I dunno about the proxy server bit, but I'm a Brit in the US, and still, ahem, follow Birmingham City. :tazz: You may have heard of them?

Worcestershire. :) Love it.

No, I'm just another crusty old bloke!

To quote a line from Highlander - There can be only one!

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{43BE9DC9-23C4-42B5-9DA8-C689E34EEAA8}: NameServer = 155.99.125.2
O23 - Service: App280cvs - Alps Electric Co., Ltd. - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

I'm having problems running WinPFind in safe mode.

After 3 hours today I had to cancel it as it was 'Not Responding' according to the Task Manager. That and I needed to get some work done!

I'm at the same point again, and am seeing CPU usage hovering in the 80-100% region even though the hard drive light is solid green.

I'm dubious that it can make it through, but I'm off up tut wooden 'ill, and leaving it running for a few hours. That'll sort it out one way or the other!

I'll await your reply. What does Taskmanager tell you about the process running?

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and I will take another look.

If the WinPfind won't run, please try this:

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Download
CCleaner

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Would you please be kind enough to run HJT and produce a different log?

*Open HijackThis.
*Click on "Open Misc Tools Section"
*Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

List all minor sections(Full)

and

List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click "Generate StartupList Log".
Click "Yes" at the prompt

It will produce a NotePad Page. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.

Did I spy a WinPfind log in that screenshot? Please post it, even if it is incomplete.

I did a manual and system search for a WinPFind.txt file, but it looks as if one wasn't created I'm afraid.

I did run the prog again, but this time in normal mode, and noticed that it hung up while scanning a PhotoShop file.

OK, to the woods where we'll find logs . . . [sorry!]

OK, tried to run WinPFind again, succeeded, and here's the .txt file.

Thanking you in anticipatio:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.
