Please review HijackThis log below. Have installed and run Ewido Suite and other adware removers, but Aurora keeps coming back. Pop ups are really annoying to the point my husband wants to trash the computer!

Hello,

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column.
Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool.
Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given.
Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again.
This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next.
Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again.
Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects").
Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next".
Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.

Ok, after the scans, here are my logs:
FYI, when I go to Add/Remove Programs, there is a program called "The Best Offers" that won't let me remove it.

Don't know if this is related to my problem, but now when I log out of my WinXp account I get
"Runtime Error! Program:C\ProgramFiles\Amemaker\UDHP95EN.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

Don't even know what AmeMaker is.

Hello,

I think you are also dealing with rootkits here, so let's trace them now. Anyway, we already made progress here, so let's deal with the rest now.

First of all, you didn't unzip/extract hijackthis.. and it's still in the tempfolder.
So I strongly advise to unzip/extract hijackthis.zip.
Read here how to unzip/extract properly:
http://metallica.gee...xplanation.html
Create a permanent folder and move hijackthis.exe into it. The reason is because hijackthis creates backups and when it's in your temp-folder it can be accidentally deleted.
How do you make a permanent folder:

Click My Computer, then C:\ and then on Program Files.
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Put your HijackThis.exe there.

It's better to print out the next instructions or save it in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!

* Open Hijackthis.
Click 'config' (bottom right) > Misc Tools > Open Uninstall Manager.
Select 'The Best Offers' in that list and choose: 'Delete this entry'

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {8638FC9D-C7FF-4751-9AA2-A1FA4952A065} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lrcll.dll
O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {A7CEBB93-D937-4096-A00C-AADED48415D3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ujien.dll
O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\UGF0\command.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\UGF0 <== folder

* Still in safe mode Start Ccleaner
click "Options", click the "Advanced" tab
Uncheck: "Only delete files older than 48 hrs.", click Ok
Click "Cleaner" and click Run Cleaner (bottom right)

Still in safe mode!!! Important:
Open Hijackthis.
Click 'config' (bottom right) > Misc Tools > Generate StartUpListlog
Check the two boxes next to it:
List also minor sections (full)
List empty sections (complete)
Click Generate StartupListlog

* Reboot your system back to normal mode.

Post the StartUpListlog in your next reply.

I think this is the culprit, but I want to be sure here:

MSIPSec: \??\C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\symevent9.sys (system)

Download Registry Search

I want you to boot in SAFE MODE again.. Important!! Otherwise in normal mode Windows won't 'see it' !!

Doubleclick Registry Search.
Enter "symevent9.sys" in the edit and click "Ok".
Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well).
Also, perform the same search for the word: adchannel

Then, go to start > run and type next command: (or copy and paste it):

sc delete cmdService

Click OK

Reboot back to normal mode and Post the logs from registry Search.

I will be on vacation starting tomorrow after, so please don't think I'm ignoring you! You've been a great help.

Hello,

It seems like we flagged the right file. :tazz:

Please boot in safe mode again (because you won't find that file in normal mode)

Delete next file manually:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\symevent9.sys

Once that file is deleted, all the other related files that comes with this infection will become visible again in normal mode and will be able to delete easily. So let's trace the other related files now.
We're almost done here. :)

Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\C6ihrAysefmm"

Click OK.

Search on your C:\ for look.txt and copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply.
Also post a new hijackthislog. :)

Hi,

Welcome back. :tazz:

I assume you already deleted next file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\symevent9.sys

So now you must be able to find and delete next files also in normal mode:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbaimlby.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\regmdlgs.exe

C:\Program Files\Amemaker <== this folder (I already asked you before to delete that one, so doublecheck if it's back again and delete that entire folder)

Then, go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

sc delete MSIPSec

Click OK

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\C6ihrAysefmm]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the regfix must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Then post a new hijacthislog made in normal mode, because above one is made in safe mode. :)

Also tell me how things are running now.

Hi,

I see a clean log. :tazz:

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :)
