Hi, I posted this note below on Saturday and still haven't received a reply so I'm reposting. In addition to what I wrote below, I ran CleanUp! and am still getting the annoying popups!

Here's my Hijack log. I've tried running Ad-aware SE and Spybot and tried the fix in Symantec Security Response to the adware. It didn't remove in step #4, so I didn't do step #5 (I got nervous about changing the registry when step #4 didn't work). What should I do next? Thanks in advance for help.
Susan

Welcome spinsker to Geeks to Go!

I found your previous posts and merged them into this one. You replied to your topic. As we try to look for topics with no reply, we overlooked yours. Let's get to work now.

Please disable CounterSpy, it may hinder in the fixing of some HJT entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable CounterSpy:
  • Right Click on the CounterSpy Icon located in your system tray.
  • With your mouse, hover over Active Protection Status (This should be enabled)
  • A menu will slide out, then right click on Disable Active Protection
Once you carried out this advise, please re-enable CounterSpy.

***

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it will stand in the way of us cleaning up:

Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.
Reverse the process when you’ve carried out the advise.

***

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\AppPatch\ofnitun.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Thanks for your reply! I did everything you said. My only 'glitches' were the following: After I typed the seconf filepath and hit enter, F6, enter, I got a window that said "Malicious Script detected. Your computer is halted and needs to do something about it." The option that was automatically chosen was "stop this script" and it said recommended, so I hit ok. Other options that I could have chosen were "allow once," "quarantine," etc. After I hit OK, it went back to the DOS window and it said it deleted the suspicious files or something like that and it said HiJackThis was open. You had said HijackThis would 'open.' The DOS window said it was open, but there was nothing I could access - there was no menu for HiJackThis to ask it to scan, log or fix. My only option was to reboot and I got the "Blue Screen of Death" BEFORE I checked and fixed the 3 objects you recommended. So I rebooted into Safe mood, opened HijackThis and then looked for the 3 items to check. There was only one of them there - the 3rd one "020 - Winlogon Notify: nutinfo - C:\Windows\AppPatch\nutinfo.dll" and after the line it said (File missing). I checked the box anyway and hit "Fix Checked." I will make a donation when we get this fixed - I promise!
Everything else was fine and here are my logs:

One of the options would have been 'run this entire script once'. But I should have told you about that, sorry.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\SUSAN PINSKER\FAVORITES\TECHNOLOGY\Adware Remover.lnk
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atitbvn7.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mllmj.dll

For these file, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.
Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

***

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
***

Use Windows Explorer to move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\

Check to see if there are any files with these names:
mllmj
jmllm

Remove them if they exist and let me know.

You don't have to bold them, that's what I did to mark them.

You can copy and paste them, but if you want to type it it's 'ink'.

I just got back to this tonight and when I copied the first line in the KillBox space and clicked the red button with the white X on it, it said
"All listed files will be deleted on next reboot? Yes or No" I was confused whether to still answer NO after each one until the last, since that's different than what you said it would say.

Also, I'm assuming that after each one, I delete the old one before I paste in the new one, is that right?

Thanks!

Since I didn't hear from you, I decided to go ahead and try the Killbox with my best guess as to what to do.

I chose no to the prompt "All listed files will be deleted on next reboot?" for the first two files and then on the 3rd one, I chose yes. When I got the next prompt about deleting on rebooting, I chose yes. Then it said "pending file rename operations registry data has been removed by external process" and the only choice was "OK." It didn't reboot automatically so I rebooted. I went into My Computer and made sure all hidden files were showing and checked Windows Explorer System 32 folder for those two files. I couldn't find either one.

I don't know where I stand now with the Winfixer spyware, but here's my HijackThis logile...

We are on different timezones, that's why I cannot reply when you expect me to :tazz:

Please rerun Killbox. The whole idea is to remove (kill) those files on reboot:

Is the computer running ok now?
