Hi-- I've done all of the preliminary steps that are suggested in the "click here before posting a hijack this log"-- I'm still getting many pop-ups.. Inqwire, poker, etc.--

I'm not familiar with posting in a forum-- sorry if I mess up or violate any protocols.

hijackthis is in it's own folder....

here's the hijackthis log:

Hello,

Any reason why your windows isn't up to date? You don't have even ServicePack1 installed! Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems.
Please visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update to Service Pack 1. When your system is clean afterwards, then update to SP2, because updating to SP2 CAN cause problems as long as you are infected.

Please download LQfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • You need an active internetconnection, so make sure your you're not blocking any connection now.
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.
Then do a scan with HJT and post a new log by using Add Reply

I thought that this system had service pack 1... apparently not, it's now installed..
this is a used / home built pc... it belongs to my wife, who is a teacher at a private school.. the winxp is available to the teachers, via the volume license
I am having trouble with win updates??? the school system administrator is in the process of finding out why win is denying updates..all the other systems allow updates--- but, service pack 1 did update-- win service pk will not update.. go figure.. but, hopefully, it will be able to update once the system is clean.. at any rate this is supposed to be a legal winxp system..

thanks again for the help, miekiemoes
... at this point the pop-ups seemed to have stopped...

Hello, just some leftovers here:

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windup.../bridge-c11.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

For windows update, try next:

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

net.exe stop wuauserv
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Save this as register.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick it and you will receive next message everytime:"DllRegisterServer ... succeeded"

Let me know if you received any error there.
Reboot afterwards and try to update windows again.

Hi.. reran hijackthis and checked/fixed the files as instructed.. the pop-ups are gone--- thank you very much.

Also, made the batch file, ran it... got all the .dll messages... windows now will update security--- I think it was 26 updates installed!!! I have not yet tried to update to service pack 2. It's going on midnite and I have to be at work at 6:30am--- I'll try the service pack 2 update tomorrow... the service pack 1 update took quite a while, I don't imagine service pack 2 would be any quicker...

Again, want to thank you... Bert

Hi Bert,

Well it seems like reregistering the files did the trick. Good you are able to update now. :tazz:

Perform a full scan with an updated Adaware SE and/or Spybot S&D to get rid of the leftovers.
If you don't have those programs yet, you can find the downloadlocations in my sig.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you are having XP SP2, read here how to configure Security Features for Internet Explorer:
http://www.microsoft...xp/iesecxp.mspx

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :)

Hi, well the reason that is causing this is because you have more than one antivirus installed.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously!

I know you were having these scanners before, but as you see, someday it will cause errors.

So, I suggest you uninstall both (Avast and Norton) and reinstall the one you want.

Hi again... I uninstalled advast... Norton won't uninstall!!! Can't get to win help files, can't get to microsoft update.... when I try to uninstall Norton, warning tab:
"Windows installer service can not be accessed" appears??? Has something taken over Norton?? Is something in service pack 2 blocking???

I put spywareblaster on... could it be that???

Anyway, Norton won't uninstall.. any thoughts on how to force an uninstall??

perplexed... thanks Bert

Hi-- went to microsoft link... printed all info from microsoft..

tried to reregister the msiexec.exe... search function is no longer working, but it is in c:\windows\system32-- checked the registery, image path and thats correct. boot into safe mode-- run--msiexec /regserver--

boot into normal mode--- didn't work.

tried step 2-- which is run--- attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\system32\dllcache

I get a moment of the cmd window-- then it closes-- so I don't get to rename the files as .old

other programs will uninstall---- it appears to be only Norton that won't install

still perplexed... thanks bert

Hello,

This is really not malware related. System restore are your system restore points and I see no reason why to format.
Ok, tell me what problems you are exactly having now.
Seems like Norton is a pain here and nothing else. Believe me, you are not the first one.

Hi again... the problems

1. Windows-- Start--- Help and support... won't run.. i get the hourglass for a moment then nothing happens.

2. windows-- Start--- Search... won't run..i get the hourglass for a moment then nothing happens.

3. Norton Suite.. virus scan Auto protect has turned itself off-- and says that there is an "internal system error"... Also, Norton Live update says "failed". I have reinstalled "live update" several times from the Symantec website several times, which hasn't helped-- that was the advice from the Norton help files-- uninstall/reinstall "live update.

4. Windows updates won't work again... there are instructions to make some changes to I.E. secutity setting, but the setting are already at the settings suggested?

5. I had both advast and Norton virus scan... as advised, I was going to uninstall both and put one back on.... Advast uninstalled OK. Norton will not uninstall. Warning--"the windows installer service can not be accessed. this can occur if you are running in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact support personel etc."

--I went to the microsoft support link you gave... tried both options..
Method 1-- re-register the windows installer---- didn't work
Method 2--reinstall the windows installer--- didn't work either--- the command
attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\system32\dllcache-- opens a back window for a second then closes... I can not continue the directions to rename msi.dll to msi.old and msiexec.exe to msiexe.old and msihnd.dll to msihnd.old---- I suppose I could just find those files in explore and rename them.

What happened prior to all this--
Got service pack2

downloaded and installed spywareblaster v3.4

Spybot search and distroy.. some of it's windows weren't working so I uninstalled it. but it was a bad uninstall--- the folders and all info still appeared in c:\programs\, so I had to manually delete them before I could reinstall spybot.

Right about there... Norton started screwing up...

I have tried x3 to Reset to an earlier time in RESTORE--but, "Can not restore to that Setpoint" each time

Other programs look like they would uninstall.... It appears that it's only Norton that won't uninstall...

There may be more weird stuff happening.. these are what I've noted...

Interesting, but a little frustrating-- very time consuming..

Any ideas?? Thanks Bert
