Can you please foloows these instructions

View Hidden Files and Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.


File/Folder Deletions
ok go to these folders and delete anything saying Symantec or Norton
C;\Documents and settings\<<go through each username>>\application Data\ <-- anything saying Symantec or Norton
C;\Program Files\ <-- anything saying Symantec or Norton
C:\Program Files\common files\ <-- anything saying Symantec or Norton


Downloads
Download "RegSeeker" and extract the files to your desktop -this should create a non-zipped folder on your desktop.

Download GetServices by Grinler. Extract the zip file to your C: drive. Once it is extracted there will be a directory on your C: drive called getservice. Inside the C:\getservice directory will be a file called getservice.bat . Simply double-click on the getservice.bat file and when it is completed a notepad will open with a lot of information. You can then copy the entire contents of that notepad to a reply to this thread.

Download and install the "Windows Installer cleanup Utility"

Run the installer Cleanup from your start menu. Remove any entries that say, Norton or symantec, Or that have the prefix cc you can click and drag to select multiple entries...When Finished Click Exit.


Registry backup
Go to Start > Run and type Regedit. On the left side scroll up to the top and select "My Computer" then go to the File menu and select Export. Save the Export to your C:\ drive as "Backup.reg" Now close the regedit windows.

This is The part that will be tough, neither myself or the forums in which i post this can be held responsible for any errors that may come of the following process. That said, Ive done this several times without any trouble, as have many others.


Registry Cleaning
Right click this Link and select "save link as..." save it in the RegSeeker Folder, Delete the file "Exclude.ini" Rename Exclude.txt to "Exclude.ini." Now Double Click on RegSeeker.exe and run the program, Select Clean The Registry then make sure all the bloxes are checked and click OK.

Now the tough part, You need to actually go through and read the error associated with each entry shown.
We want to IGNORE entries with the following:

• Extension Not Used
• Obsolete Entry
• Obsolete Start Menu Item
• File Type not used

We want to select and Delete The following:

• Invalid ActiveX/CLSID
• File Or Path Does Not Exist

Specifically anything that says Symantec or Norton, but im sure your registry could use a good clean out anyways!
You can click and drag to Select more than one entry at a Time

Note: It may take more than 1 Pass with the RegSeeker Scan to get all the entries

empty your Recycling bin, then reboot your computer. Tell me how things went, and post the GetServices log

I found in microsoft... how to repair installer for winxp--- didn't help.. uninstall tries to start then the warning appears...
unregistered msiexec... then registered.. looked like it worked-- but no help

maybe I should reinstall avast... I'm thinking that may be the problem... when I uninstalled advast a warning appeared that the uninstallation might affect Norton??

Hi.. brief repost...

I'm thinking that this happened about at the uninstall avast... there was a warning tile... about this uninstall has common files with Norton and may affect norton antivirus...

I found in Microsoft.com the "how to fix installer services for winxp".. it was easy and looked as something happened... when I again tried to uninstall Norton it started to work but then... same warning about install not working, etc.

Maybe I should reinstall avast.. and see if Norton will uninstall then???

On a lighter note.. What kind of dog is it in the picture?? Pitbull/staffordshire??

some areas won't let me delete... for example

can not delete APWCMDNT.DLL file is protected, there are several like this

what do I do then.... go to edit or DOS prompt???

got rid of all of the Norton files---OK

1st problem

Hi atribune.. here's the progress--

cleaned out all Norton files that I could find..

Cleaned the registery (should I have deleted--Invalid application path entries also??) DELETED ALL NORTON STUFF

Did all your suggestions... EXCEPT

unregister then regserver installer... didn't help.. still no installer

REBOOTED

1. Start--- Help and support... won't run.. i get the hourglass for a moment then nothing happens.

2. Start--- Search... won't run..i get the hourglass for a moment then nothing happens. Search won't run from anywhere..

3. The recycle bin still is labeled "Norton protected recycle bin"

4. Installer won't run.. can't get to microsoft update, etc.


Here's the log from get services... it's kind of big... I note at least one Norton product still running!!! ?? THE RECYCLE BIN??--Aaaah, can't kill it!!!

Hi Bert can you please click start then run and Type in services.msc.

This will open the windows services manager.

Double click on each of the following and change the startup type to disabled.

ccEvtMgr
ccPwdSvc
navapsvc
SBService
SymWSC

Then Reboot. Once you have rebooted delete the following folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

There's still at least one sym thing running; sym network drivers-- should I disable it too???

tried the fix for win help... fixwindowshelp.vbs--- after I click it a script pops up "repaired damage done, etc."--- but the help files still won't work

I've ran it from both the desktop and directly from c:\


search still doesn't work

start--all programs--microsoft update doesn't work

as far as I can tell the installer/uninstaller doesn't work---

Hi Atribune--- did a little more stuff

search will work out of button in explorer (that's the only way to get search function).. found some more symantec/norton stuff

stopped or deleted, etc anything symantec or Norton

went to services... stopped symantec network drivers

recleaned the regristery... lots more new items--- there were like nearly 700 to begin with

went to microsoft and added scripting for xp... fixwinhelp still apparently can not repair registery to hook up to help files
