Hello, welcome to the GeekstoGo Forums!

My name is Justin, and I will be helping you clean up your system. Lets get started!

You have the Vundo Infection, and we can fix it!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\odnuv.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Search Bar] C:\WINDOWS\searchbar.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [itunes] C:\dial.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [4cf6et9f] C:\WINDOWS\system32\4cf6et9f.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi justin thanks a lot.. :tazz:

So.. I followed the instructions and the only dilemma or unusual thing that popped up was, when I opened hijack in safe mode.. this filepath was not even present for me to select and fix...
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkll.dll

When i rebooted.. winfixer started immediately, my other problems were gone (ie searchbar.exe) here is my "active scan" report (initially active scan detected 18 viruses along with the 6 spyware.. but it said they have been disinfected.. I scanned again and no viruses were reported)

Hello!

Do not worry that you could not find that O2, vundo fix took care of it. Lets fix what PandaScan found, then we will work on getting rid of the rest of WinFixer.

1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "Delete on Reboot".

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy everything in the box below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
Adware:Adware/WUpd No disinfected C:\Program Files\Media Gateway\MediaGateway.exe
Adware:adware/wupd No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ide21201.vxd
Adware:adware/mediatickets No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\MediaGatewayX.dll
Adware:adware/sahagent No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SahImages
6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.

After rebooting, post a new HiJackThis log for me, and let me know if you are still getting WinFixer.

Hello!

I think I found the problem!

Please reopen HiJackThis and scan your computer. Please place a check mark next to the following entries. Be sure to select only the entries that are listed below, as deleting the wrong file could cause harm to your system.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.3\UWFX5NetInstaller.exe"

Next, please close all programs except for HiJackThis, and select Fix Checked.
Reboot your computer.

In your next reply, please post a new HiJackThis log, and let me know if you still get the WinFixer message upon bootup.

Hey Justin, so.... I could not find that filepath in my hijack log when I ran the scan, However, I did find a "winfixer" filepath... which I took it upon myself to delete (hopefully not screwing anything up).. I also removed the winfixer installer from my "add/remove programs" in control panel.. rebooted and winfixer did NOT pop up as usual... It has happend before, where it doesnt pop up initially.. so im still not certain if its gone.. here is my current hijack log file.. thanks!

Hello!

I do not see anything in your log.

Could you tell me the entry that you removed from HiJackThis?

It looks like you removed the right thing, but I just want to make sure.

Hey justin :tazz: .. offhand I cannot recall the entire filepath obviously.. and I already deleted the hijacklog that displayed it.. unless there is some way of retrieving a fixed/deleted file? I can't be entirely accurate in my description

but it did say "winfixer" and winfixer.exe in the filepath I checked the information on it, and i was 90% certain i wouldnt harm anything more on my computer by deleting it... It's been a few hours since I did that and I have had ZERO problems.. which is by far the longest time without incident since I got the virus.. or adaware, or whatever it was..

You can restore your backups, but that is pointless since it looks like you got the problem :tazz:

Are you noticing any other issues with your computer?

Hiya!

Im happy to help!

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions :tazz:
