Hi,

I have followed all of your steps in the Start Here section. I have Windows XP. Here is my Hijackthis log file. At this point, I am only able to connect to the internet with the Safeboot option with Network enabled. When I try a normal boot up, my PC is very slow and shuts down in about 3-5 minutes and then reboots. This cycle continues on and on. So, that is why I am working in safemode. I even tried downloading this specific software called Xoftspy to remove Surfsidekick adware, but keep receiving the message the files are in use by another program and cannot be removed. I reboot, run all of the scans again and the files are still there. They are in C:\Program files\Surksidekick\ssk.exe, sskbho.dll, sskcore.dll. I am unable to delete these files manually. I have gone into the registry and spent hours removing them from there as well, but they just keep adding themselves again.

I don't know what else to try. Here is my log file. Any guidance you could provide would be so appreciated. Thank you. I just added the Ewido log file at the bottom. Sorry for missing that step.

Hello Flux and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. I imagine that you will run this fix in safe mode anyway, so please ignore some of the instructions to go into safe mode, and if you have no internet connection, also ignore the downloads and updates..

Also, I can see no antivirus programme running, is this because you are in safe mode? Finally, if you have more than one profile on a PC, you can run into the problem of files being in use. The easiest way round it is to go to User Accounts in the control panel, and delete all but one (you won’t lose anything) and ensure that the one remaining has Administrator’s rights. Once your PC is clean, you can reinstate any profiles removed.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

Command Service (cmdService)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

cmdService

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please install Spybot search & destroy, open it, update it, immunize it, and perform a scan. When it has completed, ensure that you check everything it finds coloured Red only before clicking Fix Selected Problems. If Spybot requests starting again at reboot to clear memory resident malware, please ensure you click YES, giving it permission to do so.

Install Ad-Aware and launch it.

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the programme, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the 'Scanning' button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select 'Scan within Archives'.
Click 'Click here to select Drives + folders' and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the 'Advanced' button.
Under 'Log-file detail level', select all options.
Click the 'Tweaks' button.

Under 'Scanning Engine', select the following:
'Unload recognized processes during scanning.'
Under 'Cleaning Engine', select the following:
'Let Windows remove files in use after reboot.'
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

SurfSideKick

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\
C:\WINDOWS\ZW1wbDE4\

Please delete these files (if present) using Windows Explorer:

repairs.dll

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Thank you so much for responding. I really do appreciate it very much. :tazz:

Ok, I followed all of your instructions in Safemode.
I am running the McAfee Anti-virus program. I guess you couldn't see it because I ran the Hijackthis log file in Safemode.
I only have one user account on my PC.
I moved Hijackthis to the requested path that you recommended.

When Spybot S&D locates SurfsideKick, tries to fix the problem, I receive the error "Some problems could not be fixed, it could be the associated files are still in use (in memory)". Then it says two files could not be removed. Then I reboot like the program says to. I run the Spybot scan again and it finds Surfsidekick again and I get the same errors all over again. I rebooted and ran this scan about 4 times with no change in the result.

In regard to the instructions about the Hijackthis log file and the files you told me to remove, I only removed seven of them because most of the files that you wanted repaired, I use for work. I recognized them and they are not malware or Trojan horses. I selected the following files:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs.dll
O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\ZW1wbDE4\command.exe
O23 - Service: PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PLSRemote.exe (file missing)

I received an error from hijackthis when it tried to repair, repairs.DLL, it said, "mod Backup_makeBackup(items 020 - AppInit_DLLs:repairs.dll, Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or arguement."

In Explorer, I was not able to delete the Surfsidekick3 folder, received the error " the files may be in use by another program and cannot be removed". I will be posting the new hijack this log shortly.

Here is the hijackthis log file:

Hello again.

Please do not post a HJT log from Safe Mode.

Safe mode only loads a minimal amount of drivers, therefore I can't see what is loading normally; it becomes a futile effort.

Please post a HJT log from your PC in normal mode and I will take a look.

Also, please check in User Accounts in the Control Panel, that you have only the one profile and that the profile has administrator's rights; error 5 refers to non admin rights.

Hello again

I take it we are still operating in safe mode. There appears to be fresh infections on your PC. I anticipate having to remove some Trojans in a later fix.

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and uncheck the GUARD option.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
LQfix.exe

Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.

Follow the prompts on the screen.

Your system will reboot afterwards.

Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

PLSRemoteSvc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

O23 - Service: PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PLSRemote.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Surf Sidekick

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\WINDOWS\etb\
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\
C:\Program Files\Open Site\

Please delete this file (if present) using Windows Explorer:

repairs.dlluse search to find this file

Close Windows Explorer and Reboot normally

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbqraiv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wintask.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\s3ak879j.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe
C:\Program Files\Optimum Online\Netsurf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vsoffms.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fqqlql.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Now we must hide the files we revealed earlier by reversing the process, this is an important safeguard to stop important system files being deleted by accident.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hello!

Some progress. :tazz:

At this point my PC is only booting up in SafeMode, I try to do a normal boot up, but it still boots up in Safemode. Not sure what else to try for that.

Ok, so I did everything you said up until the Hijackthis log files that need to be removed, I did not remove:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Optimum Online] C:\Program Files\Optimum Online\Netsurf.exe -tray

That is my cable modem service provider, but everything else I removed like you directed.

In the Control Panel, SurfSidekick finally showed itself in there and I was able to remove it and delete the Surfsidekick3 folder through explorer.

I was able to access the killbox software and install it. However at this point I could not access the internet, so I was looking at these printed instructions and searched for the files that you had listed that should be removed. I searched and only found C:\WINDOWS\System32\s3ak879j.ini and had that one deleted.

Also, at this point my PC is not rebooting properly. It shuts down and then freezes with the mouse on the screen and never reboots. So, then I manually shut it down and boot it up again. Not sure why that is happening.

Here is my latest hijackthis log file:

Hello again

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.
The Netsurf file I want you to delete, is the one that reports your activities to your ISP. Removing the file will not stop you from surfing. If you do not wish to delete it, but would rather they didn’t track your activities, can I suggest you write to them in the strongest possible terms.

Since your HJT log is now looking good but you still have problems, I am quite willing to analyse a WinPfind log for you.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Hi,

I did everything you said. I removed the Netsurf file as you suggested. My PC still will not reboot, it just freezes. Then, I shut it down manually and then manually power it up. I downloaded a ton of Windows Update files.

Here is the new log you requested:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Looking better.

C:\Documents and Settings\empl18\Application Data\Sskknwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\empl18\Application Data\Sskuknwrd.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

How is it running now?

A fresh HJT log please.

Hello :tazz:

I have removed the files using Killbox by option. My PC still will not boot up normally. It keeps booting up in some form of Safe Mode no matter what I try. I am able to log on to the internet to post this, which is fantastic. Here is the way Hijackthis log file that you requested:

Hello again.

The HJT log looks good.

Go to START>RUN type in msconfig and hit enter.

In the window that opens, under the General tab, ensure there is a dot in the Normal Startup >APPLY>OK.

Reboot.

How are things now? Are you able to start in normal mode? Any further popups?

Hi,

Yes, I have tried going into msconfig and selecting Normal Startup, but when I do that, it automatically places a checkmark selecting "/SAFEBOOT" on the BOOT.INI tab. At this point it only boots up with the Selective Startup option enabled without placing the checkmark in "/SAFEBOOT" in the BOOT.INI tab automatically. So, no, it is not booting up normally at this point . I do not have any more pop-ups, but the PC is not booting up in Normal mode. Any ideas? Thanks again for all of your time spent helping to get me to this point. :tazz:

Hello again

I don't proclaim myself at being too proficient in things Microsoft, but that sounds like a boot.ini problem, especially if you are unable to uncheck the safeboot selection.

You could have a look at the SYSTEM in the Control Panel, and in particular under the advanced tab>startup and recovery. Just ensure that all appears OK there.

Here's some reading for you:

http://support.micro...b;EN-US;q289022.

This problem doesn't appear to be malware related. You may be better off visiting our OS forum.

Hi!

Well, thank you very much for that link. I was able to reconfigure my boot.ini file so that my PC would boot up normally without the "/SAFEBOOT" option checked. I can't believe it!! This is so great! So, here is a fresh HJT log from a the first normal boot up from my PC in a long time:
