Hey guys, i have used linux alot for a single computer and am activly involved in programming ina linux distro.

One side i have never looked at is networking as i have never had more than one computer...now i have 5 (well technically, some are flatmates).

I want to set up a network on linux because the XP home network just isnt doing it for us (unreliable, limited, open to viruses).

I can get Linux (slackware, Fedora, Knoppix) to access the internet when XP runs the network, now i want to work things the other way, where linux runs the network and XP is the one accessing through it. Is this possible? everyone on this network will be wanting to use MSN messenger, Explorer, some use Limewire (they purchased the pro package, so i think it is a must).

If anyone can help me with the install, or point me towards dpcumentation or whatever that can thatd be very useful. Also if someone could tell me which Distro is the easiest to set this up on that would be a great help.

Hi Dave,

I have setup my own router with Linux as the Router. The following site will show how to and what to use to create a Linux Router using a basic computer as the box instead of buying a router from the store, just take an old computer you may have laying around in the garage and then follow the instructions from this site.

BBI Agent

This is a Linux Distro for a basic internet router. I use that program to allow my family access to the internet from their computers. It's free of charge and you can install it on a floppy disk and run it from there as well. It includes a Netfilter Firewall and it is simple to setup. Hope this will help.

No problem, now I haven't play much with it but I believe it does. It is mostly a routing type server program. You can make all the changes you want to it via your browser by logging into it. I haven't had the need to moderate usage but if it has it I am going to look into it. Of course you still have to set any spyware and antivirus programs on you client computers as well as all the parental controls that you may need at the client level. You can connect it to a main server as the primary connection to the internet then run connections to the clients from the main server as well. Let me know what you think. I am going to look into the moderation part of it to see if it has it.

Another option unless you are planning on using the linux box for other things you might want to look into smoothwall. I don't know if it will do all you want it to. I have been looking into but just haven't had time to look into it. I know you can set it up to have 3 zones. Your local network is the "green" zone the internet is the "red" ( and limited ) zone and then if you need a email server or somesuch that can be set up as an orange zone. Might be worth a look anyway. just do a search for smoothwall on google should find it.

That sounds even better than the BBIagent. I am going to look into it, I have even started downloading the new Alpha 3.0 iso image to my USB thumb drive so that I can burn it into a CD. Thanks.

No problem I thought it looked good as well. I've also been told ( by a linux guy ) that it has been getting rave reviews! I haven't tried it yet , though I have downloaded and burned it. Let me know how it goes....

yeah me either.... I plan on building a dhcp server with it myself but haven't gotten around to it.... I work 6 days a week and am on call the 7th so it's hard to have time to mess with my own stuff!

I plan to use the most basic hardware possible and connect every other workstation with only cat5e lines. I was considering wireless but one step at a time would be more prudent. I want to see how this Alpha 3.0 works out before anything else. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the update. I still haven't had time to put together a smoothwall system yet. I plan on it but with my work schedule as of late doesn't leave much time for anything.
