Hi. I hope someone here can help me out.

I keep getting this blue screen of death. I don't know what is causing it and I don't know how to fix it. I happens randomly while surfing the web.

I just did a clean install of windows. The only thing installed is my firewall (outpost) and my antivirus (fprot).

I don't know what to do.

I am using Windows XP Pro on a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB ram.

Please, if anyone knows what this BSOD means or how to fix it, let me know.

I'd appreciate any help.

just a few questions for u to answer to clarify a few little things, so did this problem accure before you reinstalled or is it since, is there a particular time span it accurs eg every 20 mins, what drivers are u using the windows ones or the hardware manufacturers ones?

I have had this problem before the re-install. I figured re-installing windows would do the trick. But the problem still happens.

There is no way to know when the BSOD will strike. It happens randomly. Sometimes I wont see it for a week. Other times it can happen multiple times per day.

Everytime I got this BSOD it happens during the loading of a webpage.

For example, I can browse the topics on this forum and everything will be fine. But every once in a while I can open a topic in this forum and boom... BSOD!

I'm just using "browsing this forum" as an example. Just so you know I am not visiting any malicious site. It happens in safe websites like this forum.

It happens regardless of the browser. I've tried IE and firefox.

I have the latest manufactures drivers from the website. I installed them right after the reinstallation of windows.

i would try reseating memory probably wont make any odds but may do, also load setup defaults which agen may or may not work. good luck

afd.sys is the Kernel-mode winsock driver.

First lets try something simple, download and run WinSock fix from the following link:

Reboot and see if the problem persists.



If that does'nt work, lets try replacing the afd.sys with a fresh copy, follow the steps below to replace afd.sys:

• In your BIOS set CD-ROM has 1st Boot Device.
• Insert XP Setup CD, to boot from CD.
• After the intial loading of drivers is over, on the Welcome to Setup Screen with 3 options; Press R key, to "Repair XP installtion using Recovery Console".
• On the next screen you will be asked to choose your Windows installtion, choose the one that is causing the problem by typing the number beside it.
• Now you will be prompted for the password of Administrator, enter it; If password is blank, just press <enter>.
  
• Below are two ways to recover from this problem from the Recovery Console, use any one of them.
  Use Method1 only if u downloaded and installed SP2.
  Use Method2 if u have installed SP2 from CD and u have the CD; or if u have'nt installed SP2 at all.
• Method1:
  Type the following commands:
  cd \WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
  copy afd.sys c:\Windows\System32\drivers.
• Method2:
  Type the following command:
  expand x:\i386\afd.sy_ c:\windows\system32\afd.sys.
  (where x: the drive-letter of ur CD-ROM drive and c: is the partition where XP was installed)

btw, do you think it would be better to first try and replace afd.sys? Or should I do the winsock fix first? I know you said to do the winsock fix first, but I was just thinking that replacing afd.sys might be easier. Would it matter which one I do first?

Also, (this may be related to the problem, i dont know) my firewall always asks me if I want to allow an inbound connection on the IGMP protocol on my remote host. I always block it because i don't know what it is. Do you think that can be the problem?
