I have the ever popular winfixer 2005 popups, which appear all the time and warn me my computer may be infected with spyware. There is no may, it definitely is. Its called winfixer. I'm running XP SP2, and I've run microsoft anti-virus, ad-aware, panda scan, spyboot, trojan hunter, and spy sweeper. Mostly I've just had tracking cookies, and lately I gave up on automated stuff and ran hijack this. File is as follows. Thanks in advance for any help, I'm not a total computer idiot but automated stuff isn't finding this and I don't know what the process name is to hunt it down. Wish I could find the programmer that made this and have some private one on one time.

Download Deldomains.inf and save it on your desktop.

Right click on Deldomains.inf and click on Install.


Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Got to here. Trying to run the ms-dos batch file immediately brought up a windows message saying you are in safe mode, to continue in safe mode click yes, to go back to a past point (system restore) click no. I click yes, takes me back to desktop. Multiple times. Seems like xp is blocking ms-dos commands (or that particular batch file). Should I continue on and fix the registry settings in hijack? (the astcp.dll is the culprit I assume). Busy place here. Winfixer seems a pretty common problem :/

ok, I went through hijack this and removed those 4 objects (but was unable to run the vundo killer, vundo = a type of virus infection, no?). One of the files (the touhx one had changed names slightly, same ID #, but the name was modified, I didn't know what it was, and the number matched exactly, so I deleted that sucker). Running Hijack this again, and this is the log, hopefully my winfixer popups are gone now, which would be a huge improvement.

*edit*, ehh, i put fixed checked next to winlogin notify astcp, but it shows up again in my next hijack this run. Hrmmmm.

nope, still getting winfixer

Not sure if my safe mode is just messed up, was trying to do some other stuff (the usb 500 hz hack) in safe mode and it was doing the same error occassionally. Can you just disable windows file protection? :/

ahh, safe mode admin status got my 500 hz back, but when in admin status in safe mode my keyboard doesn't work, and my vundo folder on my desktop is gone. Hrmmm...

Can you run the entrie fix that I gave you last time, except please carry it out in the Normal Mode and not in Safe Mode.

Download Deldomains.inf and save it on your desktop.

Right click on Deldomains.inf and click on Install.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Can you tell me something about it ???

I also observe that you have no protection against infections, viruses etc. You need to get some AV program and other additional protection. I can suggest some good programs (most of the programs are also free for personal use).

I'm using microsoft anti virus/spyware but that's it. I don't like background processes because they sap system resources and I am usually surfing or gaming when I'm on the computer and I don't want anything running except my game.

All seeing eye is a third party game server browser, you can google for it, it just finds available public servers and let's you filter out the ones you do/don't want as well as find friends, etc. Useful program, not a virus. I try to be careful what I d/l and what websites I visit, not sure where I got this wonderful winfixer problem. Thanks so much

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is not adequate protection. You should consider getting more and better protection.



I would recommend the following steps to keep your PC clean (especially Step 1 to install critical Windows patches including Service Pack 2 or SP2 if not already installed and Step 8 now that your PC is clean) –

PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR FUTURE

Operating System
1. Keep the Windows and Internet Explorer updated with the latest fixes. These fixes are available free from Microsoft. Click on Tools in the IE menu bar and then on Windows update. You can also use the following links

Windows security and critical updates
Internet Explorer security and critical updates

Also ensure that automatic updates are enabled for faster updation of the system.
(Right click on My Computer on your desktop, properties and Automatic Updates tab.


Anti-Virus Software
2. Keep your Anti-virus program updated with the latest definitions. Some of the common anti-virus programs in use are :

Norton Anti-Virus
McAfee Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus --- freeware
Avast Home Edition --- freeware

Use only one anti-virus program as multiple such programs can create conflicts between themselves and severely hamper the performance of your PC.


Firewall
3. You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall, Kerio Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm


Internet Browsers
4. Have robust explorer settings. It is preferable to use an internet browser other that IE as most of the malware is targetted at IE. In case you prefer to use IE, then download a list of innocent looking but harmful websites from IE-Spyad and install it on ur PC. IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your internet explorer's restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't really innocent at all.

Some alternate browsers I suggest are Firefox Mozilla Browser and Opera

Ensure that Security level, irrespective of whichever browser you use, is set at Medium or higher, restrict the usage of cookies and activeX components.


Spyware Protection
5. Have a wall of protection against spyware / adware by installing SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs.
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources.
SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation and browser hijack attempts. Both have free ongoing updates.


Spyware Removers
6. Install programs for scanning for malware and uninstalling them. Two of the best programs, both are freeware, are :

Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

AdAware SE Personal Edition - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.


Regular Maintenance of PC
7. Finally, invest some time for regular maintenance of your PC. Delete the temporary Internet files, temporary files, cookies etc. Click on Start button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and run the program Disk Cleanup. Follow the instructions.

An alternate freeware software which can be used is CleanUp.

Keep your Registry clean. My favourite software is Registry First Aid. This is not a freeware but a trial version can be downloaded.


System Restore Points
8. Since your PC is currently clean, create a system restore point. A system restore would enable you to revert to the settings on the PC when the restore point was created. It is also a good idea to flush all earlier system restore points which may be containing infected files.

A. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

B. Restart your computer.

C. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.
