My older computer has been troubling me lately (for two to three weeks, now). The main problem is that I cannot access the Internet. For some reason, when I click the blue "Internet Explorer" icon on my desktop, nothing happens--no new window will pop up. From what I can gather, the problem isn't the connection, because I can open and use Yahoo! Messenger. Yet when I looked into my History, it has been showing that I've somehow accessed a webpage called "www.aaabesthomepage.com" for these past three weeks despite my lack of web activity.

Also, I've been wondering: what in the world is CxtPls, and if it's a bug as I presume, how do I get rid of it? :tazz:

(With a little help from my other computers, I've managed to download AVG Anti-Virus, Ad-aware, Spybot, and HijackThis onto the computer of subject.)

So, here's my HijackThis logfile. Hope you can find out what's been bothering me:

Go to control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall any or all of the following:

Surf Sidekick2
Surf Sidekick
Any toolbar/searchbar except for google

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.
Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.
Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Thank you so much for the help! :tazz: I followed all your instructions to the best of my abilities, and already my internet seems fairly cooperative (so far so good!).

As you mentioned, though, there are some items that I might not find, such as C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\SEARCH3.DLL. I didn't find that particular file, but I discovered something similar called "SEARCH3 Toolbar" in Program Files. I could swear that I deleted anything with the word "toolbar" in Add/Remove Programs (except for google), but maybe I'm missing something...? In any case, I left it alone, just to be safe.

Also, I was unable to get to the link you provided (the one to help my internet connection) in safe mode, so I instead accessed that download in the normal mode after rebooting.

Well, here it is! A new-and-improved logfile:

That's quite alright.. I should have been more clear on that about downloading the utility. It was meant to be downloaded in normal mode. I would definitely recommend uninstalling that searchbar (Search3). First thing you gotta do is disable system restore:

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
On the Performance tab click File System.
Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.

<<<Make sure you disable system restore before doing anything and then do everything in safe mode>>>

Reboot into safe mode.
Next:
Uninstall the SEARCH3 searchbar
surf sidekick2 (if it's in the list)

Run hijack this and remove the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 2] C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFSIDEKICK 2\Ssk.exe

While still in safe mode browse for and delete the following files found in bold.

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFSIDEKICK 2

Reboot normally and post a new log.

Ok. I think I fixed everything you asked about, but I have come across a few bugs on Spybot that I can't completely rid myself of: something called PeopleOnPage. Should I leave it alone?

Also, I haven't updated my computer in months, maybe years... Would you recommend that I install the latest updates on microsoft.com? (I've been told that it'll just slow down my computer since it's so old--something around 3 yrs.)

Anyways, here's my updated logfile:

Yes you definitely need to install all updates you can get from Microsoft. These updates patch critical holes in the operating system that viruses and malware can enter through.
Now that you are clean it would be a great time to do this.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. ;)
