my origional posting indicated I had a problem with psguard overlaying my desktop. Running various scans (ewido, norton...), I seem to have removed that problem. Now, Ewido finds the bloodhound.w32.ep virus in my wininet.dll file, but it is unable to fix the problem.

I believe this virus is resulting in the about:blank overlaying my homepage, else, I may have 2 problems.

Thanks in advance. Here is my newest Log file.

Thanks Didom,

Not sure if you received my first reply, so I'm trying again.

I didn't have time today to run thru all your suggestions, but I did notice that in my service window, I did find "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper", but not "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper (11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I)". Should I disable this, or am I missing something? Prior to your response, I did run Adaware and Ewido, and Norton, so maybe they removed that reference.

I will not likely be able to fully try your suggestions until next Wednesday, so I don't want you to think I'm not being responsive. Once I return from vacation, I will try them and give you feedback. Thanks again for your assistance.

Thanks,

Still seem to have problems. The only issues i had in following you directions was that I wasn't sure exactly how/where to download the Pand Activescan from the web site you listed, so I tried to run it online at the end of your instructions where you said to run it. When I started to run the online scan, the url changed to www.security2k.net with the message, "This page you are looking for is blocked by the Adaware on your PC. Remove it with Spy Trooper". I did Not say to fix it with Spy Trooper. This same occurance now happens when I try to go to many web sites.

Other than that, I performed all the steps as suggested.

Still frequently get the pop-up message "Ewido finds the bloodhound.w32.ep virus in my wininet.dll file"

here are my log files:

Please do it again, because your Smitrem log isn't complete... so please be patient!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt (C:\smitfiles.txt) log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks for the quick reply. I started from the beginning again and posted logs below. Still having same problems.

The one common thread I keep seeing is that the virus scans all recognize the error "Ewido finds the bloodhound.w32.ep virus in my wininet.dll file" , but none of them seem to be able to fix it. Also, my web pages keep being overlaid by the www.security2k.net site.

Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder & not on the desktop).
Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis (and download) and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

-----------------------------------------

Reboot your computer into safe mode (Instructions)

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.security2k.net/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.security2k.net/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINNT\system32\hp344B.tmp

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer back into normal mode and post a new HijackThis log,

Let me know if any problems persist.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\qnhlq.dll/sp.html#12047
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINNT\system32\hp6F9E.tmp

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )
Reboot your computer into safe mode (Instructions)

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\WINNT\system32\hp6F9E.tmp <= this folder

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Reboot your computer back into normal mode.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan
