Hi -

My computer has been hit by the PSGuard infection. I went through the steps in the page entitled "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Required steps before posting your log." with the following exceptions/details:

- My PC is already up to Windows XP Service Pack 2 - and I couldn't install 1a, apparently because of this (?).
- I didn't download AVP because in addition to using Ewido, I had Norton Internet Security 2005 on my PC (which is now temporarily uninstalled, as I kept getting a "NIS does not support the Repair feature - please uninstall and reinstall" message on startup; I figured I'd try to get my PC totally fixed before reinstalling).

(BTW, I couldn't get onto the Panda ActiveScan site - perhaps it is no longer around?)

PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS are mostly taken care of by going through these steps (such as PSGuard running automatically from startup, and occasional warning messages about having been infected), but:

- Each time upon startup, Ewido alerts me to the PSGuard infection associated with File: intell32.exe and Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32. I choose "Block and Clean" but it reappears upon next startup.
- IE has about:blank frozen as the startup webpage, and this will override many other pages I try to go to. I've since installed Mozilla Firefox and this problem has not occured with Mozilla.

In case it's useful, my PC is a Dell Inspiron 2500 running Windows XP (OS version 5.1.2600), 256 RAM, Pentium III (996 MHz).

Here is my HiJackThis log:

Hello Prog_Frog and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable EwidoGuard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Uncheck Guard from within the programme.

Download
cwsserviceemove.reg file and save it to the desktop

Download
CWShredder and save it to the desktop

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.security2k.net/bar.html

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp9E60.tmp
PowerReg Scheduler.exe
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

Exit Explorer

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop and post in to me in your reply.
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

Thanks for the quick reply, Crustyoldbloke!

We actually do have two identities on the PC. I've been doing everything off the one that we use 99.9% of the time. It'd be no problem to get rid of the other, if that makes things easier. I'll wait to hear back before proceeding with all of your suggestions.

I should also mention that I will be out of town for a week or so, so this thread will likely go quiet during that time. It doesn't mean I've given up or stopped checking in.

Your time and effort is very much appreciated! :tazz:

It does make things easier if there is only identity. Please delete the other identity and reinstate it after the fix if that is OK with you.

OK, will do. Like I said, because I'll be out of town, you may not hear from me for a while. I'll probably post back in 10 days or so...

Thanks again.

OK, I'll make a note to keep the thread open; I normally prune after 10 days. If I do close it in error, just PM me.

Hello, I'm back.

I've worked through your set of instructions. What I'll do is give you any notes or other info in regard to any step that I think you ought to know about. Any steps that aren't mentioned in my post were performed as requested. Then, at the bottom of the post, I'll include the four scan logs you requested. As always, much thanks for your time and help! :tazz:

Firstly could you please disable EwidoGuard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Uncheck Guard from within the programme.

I couldn't see how to do it from within the program, so I did this each time I had the PC on by right-clicking on the little "e" down on the taskbar (lower right hand corner).

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Did this; it did not find anything.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

This didn't work for me for some reason - I couldn't get the menu to appear. After trying this 5 or 6 times, I used MSCONFIG/BOOTINI/SAFEBOOT instead (and undid this option after finishing with the cwsserviceremove.reg step).

Rescan with HijackThis.  Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a checkmark  or tick against the following:

I got rid of all these (including all those beginning with O18).. there was one more that looked suspicious, but wasn't on your list:

R1 - ... Main,Default, Search_URL...http://www.security2k.net/search

I didn't touch it yet, though.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and delete them:

Done, but I couldn't find the following files (and I made sure that Explorer showed hidden/system files) in that folder or anywhere on the local disk (using Search):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp9E60.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Did this - it found 30 registry keys and 1 file. I removed everything it found.

Run Ewido:

Did this - as you'll probably see below, it found 16 things, only one of which (PSGuard) I removed, because I wasn't sure of the others. I figured I'd wait to get the OK from you first.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

This was not present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.

Didn't see a "full system scan option". I started by trying to run a scan of "My Computer" but twice it got hung up while examining this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntdll.dll

So, I retried with a scan of "Local Disks", which found 10 adwares and 1 suspicious file.

OK, I think that's everything. The PC doesn't seem to be acting up in any obviuos way at the moment, but we've been using it as little as possible while we're trying to get it clean. Below are the four scan logs. Thanks!!

Hello again

It is looking a lot better. Just a little more to adjust.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.security2...earch.php?qq=%1
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {4528BBE0-4E08-11D5-AD55-00010333D0AD} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\yhexbmes0322.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Yahoo! Messenger - {4528BBE0-4E08-11D5-AD55-00010333D0AD} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\yhexbmes0322.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

Please post a final HJT log for checking.

OK, did all that, but hit a small snag.

There was only one file in the Temp folder:

IadHide5.dll

And when I tried to delete it, I got this error message:

"Cannot delete IadHide5.dll: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

(no other programs were open, nor was I connected to the Internet at the time).

Perhaps there's some other way to get rid of it?

Anyhow, here's the latest HJT log. Thanks as always for your help!

Hello again

That file is part of backweb and whilst it is spyware, it is not malicious. We can delete it in safe mode or via Killbox selecting a "delete on reboot" option, however, you will need a full path for the file (I am guessing the path is something like below). I'll leave you to decide.

Please download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\Documents and Settings\Douglas C. Maynard\Local Settings\Temp\IadHide5.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Other than that, I have to say......................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Douglas!
