Hi,

I need help. I've got some kind of adware that has snuck onto my machine. I've managed to find and rid myself of several things but this winfixer pop up mess is very persistant. I use Norton AV, SpyGuard, SpyCatcher, Adaware, Microsoft Antispyware, none of them has been able to find what is causing my browser to keep opening these pages. I do NOT click on them, I use Alt-F4 to close them so I don't inadvertantly install anything on my machine -- and I have NO idea how this crap even managed to GET on my machine in the first place, since I've always been security conscious to the point of paranoia! I've been looking at other threads, so I've already got VUNDO and CleanUp, in case you need me to use them (I've already run a CleanUp, but since I'm not too sure about VUNDO I've only installed it, and await your instructions.)

1. Yes, I have an iwon.com personalised page as my start site for IE.

2. As for Botty.exe, it is a legitimate programme (written by my boss) for use in our work, and one which I've used for several years now to keep an eye on things in our 3D online environments.

Ok then, here is the fix, but I would like you to think about the homepage you use. This choice of homepage requires the installation of apps that can be regarded as malware, though to be fair, not a security risk. They target your searching to benefit their sponsors. Once we have got your major infection cleaned up, i will give you a link to information so you can research the issue and make your mind up.

THE FIX

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I've printed the instructions and will soon begin to implement the fix you gave me.

I look forward to reading the info on the link you will provide about IWon. I do not DL or install their 'Prize Machine' (it's like a slot machine) because I suspect it is of such ilk as you describe. I have not, to my knowledge, DL'ed anything at all from their site in the several years I have had this as my start page. I do know that Adaware takes notice of two of its cookies as being 'data miners' which I assumed was just as you said (for sponsors' advertising purposes) which, while I think is a bit sneaky, it doesn't really bother me all that much. But, I still very much look forward to reading any info you have on them of which I might not be aware. Thanks for giving me the heads-up.

I'm going to start the fix now, will be back in a little while, and I'm hopeful things will go smoothly.

Meanwhile, I read the link you sent me. I'm not at all interested in the games on the iWon site, so I never DL'ed their Prize Machine, thank heavens. I was unaware of any toolbars they offered, and I would have no interest in such a thing, anyway. But I must say that I'm rather more than a little disappointed in them, finding out they were associated with a known parasite and other such rubbish. Tsk, tsk, tsk! For shame! I'm torn, now, between changing my start page just out of principle, or keeping it because I really like the features they offer (I've tried the My Yahoo page, and a few others, but they just don't have all the things I want). *sigh* Decisions, decisions! Anyhow, I've bookmarked the page you gave me for future reference, and I'll be sure to be extra careful to not DL anything inadvertantly from ANYwhere. (I'm still puzzling over HOW I got that winantispywere/winfixer/advert crap to begin with! The whole thing really has me thoroughly browned off!)

BTW, when this rubbish initially started, I perused your Geeks to Go site and availed myself of several bits of software you recommended, including the ie-spyad. I also put 'rules' into my firewall to not permit anything from the IPs of winfixer, winantispyware, antispyware, admedia, amxtravel and a whole bunch of others that have been plaguing me, and it notifies me if any of them try to open a web page.

I'm hopeful that with the fix you provided I won't see anymore attemtps by any of these things. Please keep your fingers crossed that we managed to excise all of the malware cancer from this poor machine of mine!

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

This may take a while, it is however a very detailed scan.

Ok, will do. I hope it doesn't take as long as the Panda scan did the first time I ran it (6+ hours), and I also hope it doesn't give me as much heartburn as the Panda/ActiveScan did. I had to restart it about 7 or 8 times the first time I ran it a few days ago (it would get stuck at certain points and sit there for 20+ minutes at a time, until I'd restart it, whereupon it would quicky reach the level to which it had risen prior, and then slowly, but perceptibly, begin to rise further until it would reach its next plateau.).
