Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://206.161.193.7...4363/1061588769

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.popuppers.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://awbeta.net-nucleus.com (HKLM)
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Uninstall Error Nuker via the Add/Remove panel if listed.

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
C:\Program Files\Error Nuker\
C:\WINDOWS\eti.exe
mad.dll

Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

Hi, thanks for your reply, but I have already run CleanUp! and cannot install Ewido because I already used the trial to get rid of another infection. It has since expired and will not let you install it again. I am not at the point where I can buy it right now. And also, I have already uninstalled ErrorNuker via Add/Remove programs. Is there another way to do this?

Ewido is free after 14 days. Did you try downloading it and installing it again? It has the pro features for 14 days and if you don't buy it, it will automatically become the free version.

You run their fixes in Safe Mode. HijackThis can be run in Safe Mode to do the fixes, but when you restart and post the new log here for review, it should be in Normal Mode only. I don't want a HijackThis log in Safe Mode since some startup programs may not be found.

You should run these in Safe Mode. I'll post the new set of instructions again...

The fix should be in safe mode. But once I want a new HijackThis log, that should be scanned in normal mode. But both HijackThis and Ewido fixes should be in Safe Mode :tazz:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Right click on this link http://www.greyknigh...lO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards. This will delete all your sites in the Trusted Sites section (if you have any).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://qus8l.hpwis.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://206.161.193.7...4363/1061588769
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.media-motor.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.phillies.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.popuppers.com
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

mad.dll

Run Ewido again and save the log.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here along with the Ewido log.

And, when i tried to delete the mad.dll file before it wouldn't let me, it gave me an error message of some sort, i don't know if it will happen again. I will do the new fixes as soon as I am finished my work.

Give me this log also when you are ready:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

You should run L2MFix after you did all the previous steps I gave you. But run it in Normal Mode. I don't think it will make a difference in Safe Mode though...so let's continue with the below:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://206.161.193.7...4363/1061588769
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
mad.dll - can you find and delete this file?

Restart and run BOTH these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Resstart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

I made all of my files and folders visible before and none of the values you listed in hijackthis come up, they only show up on the scans in safe mode. Could that be because I have to sign on a different user name? Also, as I said before, I try to delete mad.dll but it gives me the error "Error: Cannot delete mad: It is being used by another person or program" and when trying to delete O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll I get the HijackThis error "An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [email protected], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2800.1106
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan."

Should I email this to that address and should I still try the changes in your previous post? Do you think if i sign on Safe Mode with networking and go on this username (its on a network) that I will be able to remove those values?

Aren't you doing this in Safe Mode? Everything should be done in Safe Mode since you said they are found there.

If that mad.dll file is still giving you problems, I want you to run KillBox (get it downloaded in Normal Mode....or get it in Safe Mode with Networking, then run it either in Normal Mode or Safe Mode...doesn't matter):

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

c:\windows\system32\mad.dll

Assuming it's in the system32 folder (which I think it is).

Restart. Does that get rid of it? Post a new HijackThis log.
