OK,

Re-ran smitRem (log below) and ran Hijackthis. Found all four of the lines of code you referred to and followed Fix instructions.

Downloaded and started the Panda Active Scan. Scan started and found one virus which it disinfected, seven Spyware (none disinfected) and one Dialer (not disinfected). The scan now seems to have 'hung' with the green activity bar stuck halfway along. It appears to be scanning F: which is a cd drive with no cd in it.

I also have a new window opened by itself titled 'Choose Profile'. I don't know whether this is connected with the Panda Scan or not.

Pre-Scan smitRem log attached.
Hijackthis log taken with PC in state as described above (i.e. Pandascan still 'hanging')

Well, after 'Cancel'ling the "Choose Profile" dialog box, the Pandascan completed and found 15 viruses which it disinfected, although there is no mention of the Bloodhound virus that triggered all of this in the first place. Some stuff has not been disinfected. See Pandascan Log below.

Have also run a fresh Hijackthis. See below.

PC does seems to be running fine with no apparent problems so far. Are we clean now and if so, could you please recommend the best preventative steps to take now. Am I better off downloading a free virus scan program, such as AVG (or one that you might recommend) or should I pay to renew my Symantec subscription?

Cheers,

Rog

OK first delete this url from your desktop Remove Spyware

Now uninstall Altnet if present

Reboot to safemode

Delete these files
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\P2P Networking v126.cpl
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32a.sys
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Roodyc

Delete this folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Altnet

Reboot

As for Symantec I use it and I have never had a problem with it.
I always hear its a resource hog and a pain to uninstall correctly. Avg is a fine program and quite capable I just prefer some of the bells and whistles you get with symantec. The choice is yours, the main thing is to keep them updated frequently

Repost and let me know how it went and I will give you some links to download some free tools to help prevent reinfection

Thanks :tazz:

loophole,

So far so good :tazz:

All seems to running fine. Many, many thanks. I've decided to pay to update my Symantec for now but having said that, any and all advice about best preventative programs/procedures etc etc gratefully received.

Also, I would like to make a donation in thanks for your help. What does the donation go toward? Upkeep for the site? Not that it matters, just interested.

Regards, and thanks again,

Rog

Fix thes 2 leftovers with hijack

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

These three are must haves and should be all you need Spywareblaster Spybot search and destroy, and Adaware (all free) you can find links to them all below as well as a few other programs you can check out.Donations in the signature go directly to the person helping you. You can donate to the site although I cant seem to find a link

Congratulations

your system is clean :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Loophole,

I think you can close this one as another successful fix. Re-ran Hijackthis and fixed those two additional lines, installed Spybot and Spywareblaster and updated my Adaware.

I've applied the above to my other computer at the same time and hope not to have to trouble you again in the future.

I've made a small donation towards your time and thank you wholeheartedly for all your help.

With very best wishes,

Rog
