Hi
I have a problem with Adaware SE the free version. I cannot launch it. I saw a post elsewhere on the site, but couldn't see if the problem had been resolved., sorry if this is going over old ground :tazz:

About 3 weeks ago I ran AVG Virus and it detected four items:

1Trojan/Classloader
2 Virus/Byteverify
3. Virus/Byteverify
4. Classloader (which it moved to the Virus vault.

1,2 and 3 are "infected, embedded object" and AVG couldn't fix/mov to vaulted/ heal/ etc.

After that AVG scan, Adaware would not load. I get two error messages:"adaware has caused an error in <unknown>" followed by "Anwendungsfehler Exception ERead Error in Modul AD-AWARE.EXE bei0021FE7/ Fehler beim Lesen von Memof.Lines.Strings: Fehler bei Einfugen von RichEdit-Zeile."

I also noticed a suspicious (?) folder "Spweng" in C: Windows\Application Data\

I Uninstalled Adaware and downloaded and installed the latest version but the problem persists.

I had previously enjoyed trouble free scans from Adaware. Also running Spybot (which is ok still ) and as mentioned above AVG.

I'd like to remove these infections and get Adaware back up and running. Can anyone please help?!!

Thanks!

PS runnning Windows ME on Athlon 1Ghz.

Delete that unknown folder in the Application Data folder.

Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK.

Did you run through all the scans listed in the readme topic? If you did, give me your HijackThis log now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = file:///C:/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/Home%20home%20page.htm - unless you set this to be your homepage, fix it also
O2 - BHO: Internet Explorer Web Content Guard - {1B77D30A-81C9-497A-8647-142F7511B1FB} - blank (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {A8658086-E6AC-4957-BC8E-7D54A7E8A790} -
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

I have run an up to date Spybot in safe mode.

I can't open Adaware in safe mode (or in normal mode) due to Angwendungsfehler presumably.

Ewido won't work on Windows ME (or so it says when I try to lauch it) only on 2000 or XP apparently.

Do you recommend an alternative to Adaware and Ewido? Or should I proceed to the next step in your list?

THanks again!

Go to c:\windows\system\ and look for riched32.dll. Rename that file to something like riched32.dll.old instead and download this file and unzip it to c:\windows\system\. Try running Ad-aware now.

Yeah, Ewido only works on Windows NT and up...

What next??

Download missingfilessetup and run it. See if it will copy over that file for you. Try running Ad-aware now.

If that didn't work, then just get that file here and unzip it to your SYSTEM folder.

Installed Missingfilessetup and it said it was successful., but Adaware will not lauch (same error).

I haven't proceeded past the Adaware bit in your post Sep 25 2005, 03:47 PM. Should I go ahead and "Fix checked" in Hijack this now?
cheers.

OK, fix it up then in HijackThis....but Ad-aware should be working, so come back to that again (maybe it works after HijackThis fix?).

When you are done with HijackThis, restart our computer and run BOTH these scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Then restart again and give me a new HijackThis log along with the Panda log.

Ok, re-ran Spybot just to be sure (clean), then Hijack this, and fixed lines you suggested. (by the way I removed the first item even though I set this as my home page)

I then ran the online scans Trendmicro and Panda.

Trendmicro found nothing.

Panda found 2 spyware items, as in log below

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/ist.istbar No disinfected C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared
Adware:adware/block-checker No disinfected Windows Registry

I had a look in that "Totem Shared" folder that Panda picked up and there were 11 dll files in there. Should these be deleted?

Here is the hijack this log having run the two online scans and restarted.

Delete that folder:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared

Click on this link and save that file. Double click on it and run it. Does it find anything?

You have a lot of programs there. Try disabling some by going to Start->Run and typing in msconfig and hit OK. Then go to the Startup tab and uncheck ONLY those you know...if you recognize the program and it's not required at startup, then uncheck it. Programs like your antivirus and firewall are required since they provide protection for your computer.

I deleted that folder C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\Totem Shared.

I unchecked a lot of startup programs. Still adaware se will not launch (same error). (I didn't recognise many of the ones listed, but then I'm not sure which ones are a legitimate part of the system. Anyways, most are disabled now.)

I ran CWS Smart Killer and it did not find any SmartKiller on my system. Ad aware will not launch still.

What about that other virus found by Panda the "Adware-Block Checker"?

Here's the Hijack this log file after finishing the above and restarting.

Check and fix these in HijackThis:

This should get rid of the block check thing:

Download Blockrem from HERE
  • Unzip it to its own folder on your desktop.
  • Boot your computer to safe mode by rebooting and tapping the F8 button repeatedly until it brings up a boot menu.
From that menu, select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys to highlight it then pressing enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the Blockrem folder on your desktop and double-click blockrem.bat (this is the file with the gear icon) to run it.
  • Once it is running please follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Reboot and post a HijackThis log.
