I'm having trouble opening mcafee or any related sites with internet explorer. i downloaded and installed mozilla firefox and it would open mcafee sites either. i can't get mcafee installed on my hard drive. when i used highjackthis to scan and started investigating some settings, highjackthis crashed. it happened repeatedly. here is the log i managed to save:

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi,

thanks for your help. i tried to download and install xp service pack 1a and as soon as i accepted the agreement and was about to install the program crashed. seems like i've got some sort of vicious intelligence at work - it crashed regedit when i tried to run that too.

suggestions?

The file that seems to be causing your problem (and mine, i'm in safemode) is the file sysfirewall.exe. go here for info on how to remove it fix
