i got a big problem right now.. norton antivirus wont open for me, and whenever i click on it, come icon names on my desktop change to "folder" such as my computer, my document..etc... i recently got something call "popcorn72" but i think i was able to delete it using hijackthis and also in the system32 folder. adaware always freeze halfway thru and norton wont even open for me, even in safe mode. i was also messing around with my registry files and MAY have accidently deleted something important there, which could be a problem. this is my hijackthis log:

EDIT: i forgot to add that i also tryed a system restore also, but after i click finish, nothin happens so i restarted my comp manually and after would say system restore failed due to bad restart

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall Viewpoint via the Add/Remove panel if listed.

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmvzp.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\


Restart your computer. Post the logs for HijackThis and Ewido.

thanks for the help, but its gettin kinda late so ima do it first i wake up tomm, but i got 1 question, i boot into safe mode to run cleanup, then i run ewido and hijackthis, do i also run those in safe mode too or do i boot back to regular windows?? thanks

Yes, run everything in safe mode if I didn't tell you to reboot/restart your computer. Once I mention restart/reboot, you should restart and go back to Normal Mode. So for the HijackThis new log, I want you to restart and run a scan in Normal Mode. The fix is done in safe mode, but the log you will give me should be in normal mode :tazz:

omg, help me plz. i d/led ewido and cleanup and did what u said up to where i boot into safe mode. but when i choose safe mode, it just restarts my comp. now i cant even boot into normal windows or the last known working configuration. it just keeps restarting my comp after i select any of em and i cant even get in. now i really don kno what to do..thanks for any help

EDIT: sorry, i forgot to add that when i first start ewido, i didnt get a message that said "database could not be found" so i just went to the next step. i don kno if that has anythin to do with this, but i though i point it out

So you weren't even able to run any of the scans for Ewido and HijackThis yet? Did you do anything else (change any settings) besides the one I mentioned?

Insert your XP CD and boot from it. Let it load to the blue setup screen. Choose the option to repair Windows. Let it repair Windows and see if that can get you back to speed.

i follow ur instructions exectly and yea i tryed to repair XP using the XP cd..still nothin. i tryed to create a new partition too, but for some reason it says i don have enough space even tho i got like 50Gb free. i also try the chkdsk command and it said everythin was fine. i was gonna try the fixboot command, but it gave me a message sayin somethin about if i want to write a bootsector to partition C, i wasnt sure what that meant, so i didnt do anythin with that yet. im tryin not to lose anythin on my comp since i have a lot i wanna keep, so as long as i can boot into normal windows and burn some backups, that be fine too. if nothin works, im probably gonna boot XP from my other hard drive and just transfer my files over and reformat. thanks for ur help greyknight, i really apprecited it =)

I'm not exactly sure what happened here as the fix I gave you should not have caused this problem. THe infection you had there didn't seem to be very harmful in itself either.

Yes, slave it to another computer and copy your data over now. If you want, install Ewido on the other computer and see if you can run a scan on this hard drive (the one that can't boot). It might find something and actually fix it up for you.
