I have a computer that is infected by numerous malware. We get so many popups, even when we are not running a browser that the computer is unusable.

I have followed all of the instructions you listed to try to clean the many infections on my computer to no effect: Install, update and run Ad-Aware, Run the VX-2 add-in, run Spybot & Trend Housecall. Even though these programs all found and fixed numerous infections, the computer remains infected.

I am hoping that you can examine my attached hijackthis log and tell me how to clean this computer for good.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi schandle and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Your system is in extremely bad shape. It will take a lot of time and effort on both our parts to even come close to cleaning it up.

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

Thank you for your help. I will follow your instructions and post the new HJT log in the next couple of days. However, given your assessment that the machine is in extremely bad shape and that it will take a great deal of effort to fix it, I have to wonder are we better off copying any vital information off of the machine and just reformatting the drive and reinstalling the OS?

What do you think?

Thanks,
schandle

It is your call. It will require quite a few hours of your time but the service is free.

You take it in to a shop, they reformat, reinstall the OS, then you still have to reinstall all your programs and data and they charge you.

Your log doesn't have anything we volunteers can't handle. I'm online every night so it will depend on your availability.

Please inform us of your decision one way or another so we can better manage our threads.

If I were you, I would choose ME. See no ego problem here

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

I would be doing the OS-load myself which won't be a problem since I used to do this type of thing for a living. However, I appreciate your ego-free (and no cost) advice! :tazz: Basically, I am looking for the solution that, at the end of the day, gives me the highest probability of a clean machine.

This machine belongs to a friend and I don't have access to it on a daily basis, so it will take another day or two to post the new HJT log. I will do so and have another go at cleaning the machine before I punt and reformat the hard drive.

Thanks again.
