My PC is infected with the desktophijack virus according to Norton Internet Security, which keeps popping up windows. I've tried everything, including the initial instructions on this site, but my problem persists. Can you please help!?!?!

Many thanks!

Below is my HijackThis log.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknigh...com/spyware.htm

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip the files to a folder on your Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update button to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Download cwsserviceremove http://www.greyknigh...rviceremove.zip and unzip it to your desktop. Don't run it yet.

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://thesearchmall.com/index.php

Run AboutBuster and click Begin Removal button. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Click Exit once you are done. Click the OK button and it should exit. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\jmnti.dll
C:\WINDOWS\d3hc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntgt32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javarr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netho.exe

C:\install.cab
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appxg.exe

Run cwsserviceremove.reg and choose Yes to add it to the registry.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Grey Knight,

Thank you for your reply!!!

I did everything you said. However, I'm still getting Norton warning popups that my wininet.dll file is infected with desktophijack. Also, my internet browser defaults to about.com.

Attached are both the AboutBuster logfile and HijackThis log files you requested:

Yes, I know. Thanks for updating me on it :tazz:

OK, this one will take several tries before we can remove it. So I will go straight to fix the wininet.dll file first. Maybe Ewido will help us remove this earlier infection first.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://thesearchmall.com/index.php
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ordrw.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ordrw.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ordrw.dll/sp.html#93256
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {4763B786-7117-D6E2-6EAD-059429FFA44C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msuz.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atlew.exe] C:\WINDOWS\atlew.exe
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11F#`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sdkti32.exe
O23 - Service: SmartFinder Uninstall (SmartFinder_Uninstall) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Temp\SFUninstaller.exe" service (file missing)

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ordrw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msuz.dll
C:\WINDOWS\atlew.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sdkti32.exe

Run AboutBuster and click Begin Removal button. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Click Exit once you are done. Click the OK button and it should exit. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

Run cwsserviceremove.reg again.

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

And finally, the Panda log. One deviation from instructions here, when I got to the site and ran the Activescan I didn't see an "autoclean" option. Therefore, whatever it found is still probably on my PC.

What do you mean it's the log created earlier in the process? The new HijackThis log should be AFTER you completed everything. So, is this log ran before or after you did all the fixes? I mean everything....otherwise this log is not the latest log.

For the Panda log, I want you to delete all the files there...except for the System Volume...files. That's in your system restore points...we will have to disable it when we are done (remind me about this). So delete all the files found by Panda and also this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Hoehner\Favorites\SITES ABOUT\

Then restart and run a new Panda scan. Post the log here along with a new HijackThis log.

First off, thanks for your patience. I really appreciate all the time and help you are giving me!!! :tazz:

Below is the Panda log:

I deleted the first two files listed, but was unable to locate the last one listed (ieatgpc.inf). All the others appear to be System Volume files.

We should be close to cleaning this mess up now...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Download AboutBuster http://www.greyknigh...AboutBuster.zip and unzip the files to a folder on your Desktop. Run AboutBuster and click OK. Click Update button to see if there are any updates. Close the program now.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Don't run it yet.

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

sc stop SmartFinder_Uninstall
sc delete SmartFinder_Uninstall
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it.

Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc Tools->Delete an NT service and type in SmartFinder_Uninstall and hit OK.

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for SmartFinder Uninstall (SmartFinder_Uninstall) and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Run the CleanUp program you downloaded earlier ago again.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\yhdlh.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\yhdlh.dll/sp.html#93256
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\yhdlh.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O23 - Service: SmartFinder Uninstall (SmartFinder_Uninstall) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Temp\SFUninstaller.exe" service (file issing)

Run AboutBuster and click Begin Removal button. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Click Exit once you are done. Click the OK button and it should exit. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ieatgpc.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Hoehner\Favorites\Search the web.url
C:\Documents and Settings\Thomas Hoehner\Desktop\Download Movies.url
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yhdlh.dll

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close out of it and restart your computer manually (another words, do it yourself).

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

I had trouble updating AboutBuster for the past 2 days. I'm getting a "Runtime Error 5 - Invalid Procedure Call or Argument" when I try to Update. Same error comes up when I try to re-run AboutBuster after attempting an update. If I reinstall the app and run it straight off it runs OK. Below is the logfile when I run it this way (again, without any updates).

One thing to note here, when I ran HijackThis the first time as you instructed above there was no R1 - HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings, ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.2 or R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing in the scan result. However, when I ran it the last time the two files above showed up. I checked them and clicked fix, rebooted, and ran HijackThis again with the log shown above resulting. I don't see the files in there anymore. Not sure what that means.

Thanks.
