Hi, I'm Nike and I've tried just about everything (how many times have you heard that?). And don't worry, I've been through the "Start Here" ^ post about ten times *sigh* This is my last hope before reformatting. I've never had a problem with this computer until I moved and installed Sympatico. I tried installing SP2, but was unable to use the internet after I did. When I uninstalled it my computer refuses to believe that I have an audio device, although I've made no changes at all in that respect. I find this the most disturbing development of all and if there's any chance that I can fix it by eradicating the Malware, please let me know.

I recognize some of the stuff in the log already, but I've tried removing them with other programs (and even manually, regedit and all) and they just come back, whatever I do. Haven't tried removing them with HJT yet, so please tell me that will make a difference!

I don't know exactly what you need to know about my operating system, but I have Windows XP SP1, I believe. Please let me know what you need and I'll get the information to you as soon as humanly possible!

Thank you so much!

Anyway, here's my HJT Log:

Yay! Yes, still the same problems. ISTbar really wants to be installed on Firefox and a bunch of ads have started to take over (I moved from IE, but it seems to be following me). Plus, I have trouble keeping Outlook from locking up. Do you think that my sound problem can be resolved? Thank you so, so much for helping me!

It looks you have a few separate issues in your log, so we're going to have to take them one at a time.

Please download LQfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will now reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.
Now do a scan with HiJackThis and post a new log by using Add Reply

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Please download CleanUp 4.0
Install CleanUp, but don't run it yet.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall these programs, if they appear.

    Surf Accuracy
    Media Gateway

  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

  • Run CleanUp 4.0. This will remove all of your temp files.

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.

  • Reboot back into normal mode.

  • Please run this online virus scan - Panda Virus Scan
    • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
    • There may be files that this scan will not remove. Please save that information to include in your next post.

  • Reboot your computer and post the following information in your next reply:
    • A new Hijackthis log
    • The Ewido log
    • The log from Panda online virus scan
Let me know how things are running and what problems you are still having.

Ok, I'm not getting the pop-ups when I first get on anymore. Sound still doesn't work, though.

Your sound issue is likely caused by a bad driver. We'll get to that once you are clean of malware as it's probably unrelated.

Please delete these files, if present.

I'm sorry, I thought I already replied to your last message...

Anyway, check on the first two steps, but I already installed SpySweeper when I was trying the "Start Here" thread and it's expired since then. I hesitate to buy it... What should I do?

No need to buy it. Spysweeper does an exceptional job cleaning the registry, but there are other programs that will also perform what we need.

Please download and install A-Squared
http://www.emsisoft..../software/free/

After installation you will need to register(it's free) with them in order to download the updates. Once all updates are installed run a full scan. Once the scan is complete save the report and post it(or attach it) in your next reply.

Also run a scan with Spybot and Adaware, which you should already have installed.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Will Spysweeper still scan your system, even though the trial has expired? If it will, run a scan. If not, go ahead and uninstall it.

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Microsoft New Game 2 When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button(if available), then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Do the same thing with TASKESV

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

svehost32

And then this one also...

TESV

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\System32\\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Well, for the most part, everything is great! Thanks a bunch! One of the first things that happened was that the "Custom Level" button in IE's Internet Options (under Security) was grayed out. It still is, but at least it's not changing by itself anymore... Any idea how I can get that functioning again?

Oh, and do you think I'll be able to install sp2 without being denied access to the internet now? Where should I get help with my audio?

:tazz: Thanks for everything.
