Popup appears every couple minutes

I've followed the applicable steps on the "start here" page, with no luck. I get popups appearing every few minutes as long as I'm connected to the internet. When I was using IE, I got ads, but now I've switched to Firefox the popups load the mozilla.org homepage. There was a particular address that many (but not all) of the ads were at; I don't remember what it was, but I could find out if you need. Someone would have to remind me how to make IE my default browser.

I don't think the annoyance appeared after any download of anything on my part, but it did coincide with Zone Alarm beginning to notify me after startup that rundll32.exe was trying to access the internet. And I always clicked to prevent it from accessing the internet because it freaked me out. I don't know what rundll32.exe is but it never wanted to access the internet before.
