I know I am infected with SpySheriff and a couple of other doozies... my AVG Free and Microsoft Spyware are both running and I have no idea what to do with it or how I got infected. I also downloaded the ewido security guide and that log can be provided per requests. I have also run the AdAware I just downloaded per instructions before posting my log.

Whoever takes this task... thank you SO much and let's see what we can get done???

Thanks!

Hello dayshaze and welcome to GeeksToGo. :tazz:

We will be using both Ewido and AdAware SE that you have already downloaded. I have left the instructions in the fix pertaining to installing and updating them. Make sure you have the latest definitions for both programs before continuing with the fix instructions.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Office] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msoffice32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [aupd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\symcsvc.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

Delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernels32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msoffice32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\symcsvc.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, click "Scan your PC". After the ActiveX controls load, click "My Computer" to do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Here are the four logs you requested.

Thank you so much for your help!

I did have some issues when I first ran the HijackThis! I was unable to find these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msoffice32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\symcsvc.exe

But I ran the rest of the tests as requested. Will this make a difference? Is my computer malware free?

Thank you again.

That last HijackThis log appears to have been run in Safe Mode. I'll need to see one run in Normal Mode.

Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\phhr.bat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vxh8jkdq6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ztoolbar.xml
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows XP\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0X2B4P67\CA8905SR.htm
C:\Documents and Settings\Windows XP\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\TS0B1XW1\CASLIN49.HTM

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After the computer reboots, scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log as a reply to this thread.
Let me know how the computer is behaving now.

Hi Alan. Again, thank you very much for your help. Ever since I did what you had told me, the computer is running better than it was. A lot better. While I was running Killbox, my AVG popped up and indicated some new infected files. I will run that.

Upon running HJT in regular mode, I was able to find

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [aupd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\symcsvc.exe

so I told it to fix that file. I was unable to find the msoffice32.exe on any run.

Here is the new log. Thank you.

Nicole

Step 1
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following file:

C:\winstall.exe

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

Hi Also.

I encountered some issues about performing step 3. I went into my computer and cleared both boxes as you asked... but nothing popped up in that screen, nothing changed.. I couldn't find wininstall.exe. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, Nicole

That file may not exist on your computer any longer.

Go ahead and post a fresh HijackThis log so I can see how it looks now.
Also, let me know how the computer is behaving now.
