Yesterday, I decided to attempt to protect my files by creating a password for my main / Administrator Windows XP user account. I created the password, left an obvious clue for myself and remember what I put in, but when I restart and put in what I remember as the password, it won't work. As such, I have to use windows as a Guest, which doesn't keep me from my files, but it does keep me from using certain drives, such as my new DVD-R / DVD-RW, as well as performing any system repairs or modifications. I went to Microsoft.com's help forum and found a solution that entails restarting Windows XP in safe mode, but for some reason, my computer (or XP) will not restart in Safe Mode.

What do I do and how do I re-install XP if necessary given that, as the "Guest," I haven't the security allowance to install such a program?

To start in Safemode:

1) Turn on/restart computer.
2) Keep pressing F8 untill you come to a screen that has a list of options.
3) Use the arrow keys and hightlight Safemode and press Enter.
4) Press Enter again.
5) When you come to the Welcome Screen select the Admin account.
6) A Dialog should pop up asking if you want to enter Safemode, Click Yes
7) Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Select the account you wish to edit -> Click Remove password -> Remove Password.
8) Close all the windows
9) Restart the computer.
