Winfixer 2005 has virtually locked me out of Ineternet Explorer. I have followed all Geeks To Go recommendations, ran all the software, with the following exceptions.

- CWShredder found "VX2.LOOK2Me" but this reappears when the PC is restarted.

- Unable to use IE, I downloaded Firefox, which works w/o trouble. However, TrendMicro does not recognize Firefox, thinks I'm using Netscape and tells me it can't find the Plugins.

- I ran Norton AV with current AV updates.

- My Windows critical updates are up to date as of a week ago. However, I attempted to rerun the updates, which opened IE, and WinFixer took over.

Yes, I do still need help Greyknight. Thank you kindly for your response. Since my original post, I have done considerable research on the web re: Malware removal, including reading similar GTG posts, et al, but am smart enough to know when expert help is warranted. The solutions I have read vary significantly, which leaves me somewhat confused. Perhaps, as an engineer, I'm a bit cautious. While I would consider myself above the average Joe w/ computers, I am cautious since this laptop contains all my companies business work. I grew up programming math and engineering in the 70's and early 80's, archaic today I understand. But FYI, I can operate in DOS and/or Safe Mode, as required. I might need some refresher on some of the DOS commands, if required, but I recall the basics.

Since my original post I have downloaded and run additional software, in addition to that mentioned in my original post. I was about to run FixVundo.exe (from Symantec) but checked for a reply @ GTG and found yours. I will await your instructions before proceeding any further. Some of the issues I have run into include;

- SpyWareGuard Browser Protection Alert pops up regularly. The window reads "An attempt to change IE settings has been detected. Warning: Your IE search bar has been changed! Your IE current user search bar has been changed from: http://my.netzero.ne...ch?r=minisearch, To: [url="http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html""]http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html"[/url] The options include "Restore Old Value" or "Keep New Value". I have chosen the former option each time. Today I Disabled "MyWay.com" in Control Panel - Internet Properties - Programs - Manage Add-Ons. Haven't seen the pop-up message since.

- After running CWShredder it reports that VX2.Look2Me has been found (none of the others on the list are found). Following, the Fix CWShredder reports that this file has been removed. However, on Reboot a window appears stating "CWShredder has encountered a problem and needs to close" w/ the usual MS reuest to send a report. I sent a report the first time. Useless effort.

- EWIDO Security Suite window pops up at every start up, twice in succession in fact. The message reads (summarized) "Infected Object Found! File: ddcyx.dll, Path: Windows\System32, Infection: Trojan.Crypto.O". I attempted to delete this file from Windows Explorer, and again by navigating thru a DOS prompt, w/o success. The response reads "Unable to delete file, being used by other application".

Hope I'm not boring you w/ details, but GTG instructs to report eveything. By the way, I have run all but CWShredder in Safe Mode and normal Windows mode.

As of this writing, I have the following software on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000).

By the way, I downloaded Firefox the day of my original post and am able to access the internet w/o, apparently, any operating problems. No doubt things are working in the background. Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyx.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\xycdd.*
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Following the above instruction things went awry.

1. Restarted the computer as ADMINISTRATOR in Safe Mode (SM). After logging in the usual Windows pop-up appeared announcing start up in SM w/ "Yes" or No" buttons. However, the pop up disappeared almost immediately. I've not seen this before and have logged in as SM many times. The screen displayed SM in the four corners, as usual, but no Icons were present and I could not find the Task Bar at the bottom of the screen. The only application I could access was Task Manager, which I utilized to shut down the computer.

2. Started up the computer from total shut down and repeated/encountered all in 1. above. However, this time I recorded the following from Task Manager.

3. Shut Down and restarted in normal Windows mode as "Ed M" rather than "Administrator". Start up was normal, all screen icons appeared, able to access the task bar and all applications. Ran a new HijackThis log, see below.

By the way, while typing this I periodically get the Ewido pop-up alerting me "Injected Object Found", file ddcyx.dll. I have not seen this before today while using Firefox as my browser.

So you didn't run the fix I gave you then? Do you know how to navigate using the Task Manager? Just go to File->New Task and enter the path to the KillVundo.bat to run it. Fix the entries in HijackThis....etc...

GreyKnight17.... No problems/issues encountered since completing your instructions. Not sure how to thank you, but you will receive a thank you from me personally & directly. I do have a few questions though.

I have the following programs on my desktop. Which, if any, should I discard?

- CWShredder (never worked, as I noted in an earlier post).

- Ewido Security Suite, trial version. Worth the investment?

- Trojan Hunter (TrendMicro), trial version. Worth the investment?

- SpyWareBlaster & SpyWareGuard; I will keep these, as you recommend.

- Ad-Aware SE Personal (freeware).

- Spybot S&D (freeware).

- VundoFix... do I need this anymore?

- CleanUp.... do I need this anymore?

I have Norton AV (freeware) installed & running. Interesting that NAV was operational & updated for viruses & trojans and yet the Vundo trojan got thru anyway.

I downloaded Firefox a few days after the WinFixer (Vundo) infection. I do not now use IE unless required to do so by a website (have NEVER used IE on my home computer, I use Netscape, may soon change to Mozilla's Firefox, what do you think?).

I visited your website, http://www.greyknight17.com, and was impressed w/ the help that you offer for us lackey's. A few comments/questions.

- Mozilla/Firefox does not currently offer automatic updates. A manual check for updates is required (note the recent upgrade from version 1.0.6 to 1.0.7 responding to a security issue. Mozilla is quick! MS take note!). I was not aware of this until a colleague mentioned this to me today. I immediately updated.

- On your SpyWare Prevention page (very informative by the way) you have stricken Microsoft AntiSpyware and Miscrosoft AntiSpyware's Real Time Protection. No explanation. Why? Other websites recommend this software.

- What affect on my computer performance (e.g., boot up speed, etc.) should I expect if I download IE-Spyad, HOSTS, RegSeeker, etc., as you recommend on your website? I have downloaded other "protection" software and find boot up to be considerably slower (reminds me of the old XP days when I could brew a pot of coffee while awaiting my PC's start up).

Your help is sincereley appreciated, and I will refer friends/colleagues to you. I have your website. With any luck, I won't need your help again, but I have no doubt that others will.

So you ran CWShredder already and it works, but after a restart it reports a message for no apparent reason?

Trojan Hunter is good from what I heard, but I say, no need to buy it unless you don't mind spending more $$$. I don't have it No need for VundoFix anymore. Get rid of anything related to it. CleanUp is a good program to have for general use since it cleans up your temporary folders...so yes, I recommend keeping that program Ewido? Keep the one you have now....leave it for 14 days and it will become the free edition. It's still good

Everyone who knows me, know that I don't like Norton. It's just not that good and stable...the thing guzzles your system resources most of the time. I recommend using Grisoft AVG and ZoneAlarm as your antivirus and firewall programs. Both are free for personal use. So if you get those, uninstall Norton first.

I do recommend using Firefox, but am changing my view even on that browser now. Seems like no browsers are really safe these days. Even Firefox is having major security problems lately (also it's crashing out on me a lot lately too). I say use it if you wish...keep your Internet Explorer up to date with the patches and be careful what sites you visit. You should be safe if you take those precautions. Might I recommend a browser called Opera? I haven't used that for many years, but just tried out the new version...I love it .... Good bye Firefox

Microsoft has decided not to detect and remove some of the major spyware components that us, as analysts here, do ask users to remove. Because of their actions, a lot of us (not sure about GeeksToGo staff, but in another big forum I'm in) have decided not to use it anymore. Use it if you still want to...but we don't ask users to use it anymore. Unless Microsoft changes their act, the decision will remain the same.

Depends. All those that you listed will NOT (or should not ) slow your machine done at all. They are just one time things that you need to run (except maybe for upgrades if there are any for the HOSTS and ie-spyad files). Once you run the steps to complete them, you probably don't have to touch them for a while...unlike Ad-aware, Spybot...etc...where you have to check for updates frequently and run their scans. SpywareGuard on the other hand will use some resources since it's running in the background for live protection. SpywareBlaster, like the HOSTS file does not use any resources after you run it. Just need to check for updates and Enable the new protection. Close it and you're set...until the next set of updates

Just disable programs you don't need at startup. Most startup slowdowns are due to having too many programs running at startup. I mean, security programs are crucial (leave those), but is a program like AOL Instant Messenger really necessary at startup? You can run those manually. You know what I mean? In your case (after you uninstall Norton .... hopefully ), you should disable other unnecessary programs like Java, Messenger, etc. That should speed things up a little.

No further issues, except that I continue to see a Windows pop up on reboot that CWShredder is having a problem and must shut down. I will delete CWShredder and download another time. For now, much work to catch up on.

And by the way, now that you've fixed my problems I can say Go Red Sox!
