Hello.

My sister is having some trouble with her computer lately. She uses Windows XP. I have run Spybot S&D, and it had found something called "Windows Security virusscan disablealert" and "Windows Security Firewall Disablealert"


I have never heard of this problem before. Can someone please help me?

I think I should let you know that the entries with "Localnet" and "Total Internet" are associated with her ISP.

Check if both Firewall and Virus Protection are turned ON. If not, you can turn the firewall on from right there and the antivirus protection from within your antivirus program.

Next, in Security Center on the left click on "Change the way the security center alerts me" and put a check next to all items there.

You need to move HijackThis to a permanent folder. Please make a new folder either in My Documents or in your C:\ drive and then copy /paste HijackThis.exe into that folder. Then delete those copies in the temp folder.

Next, open HijackThis in its new location and click Scan. Put a check next to these:

Thank you for the reply, Armodeluxe. I will do as instructed on her system, but I won't be able to until this weekend.

When I installed HTJ onto both her computer and my mother's, I did download the program to it's own folder in "MY Documents". I do not know why I'm getting the messages that I need to do this again. If I open "My Documents" in either computer, there is a folder labeled "HJT", and inside that folder is an icon that looks like a folder with a zipper going up the middle. Have I installed it incorrectly?

I will get back to you Saturday with a Panda log and a new HJT log for my sister's system. I would fix the problems sooner, but she will not be available until then.

Hi Sheila

That icon you're talking about is the icon of a zip folder. Right click on that icon and choose "extract all". Then choose to extract to the same folder the zip file is in. Once the file is extracted, you can run HijackThis from that folder and delete the zip file..

ohhhhhh, okay. I get it now. I'll be sure to do the same with my mother's computer and her HJT. I personally run WIN98, and the zip files are just slightly different than XP I suppose.

As for my sister's puter, she decided to just take it to the shop. I suppose she didn't trust me to fix it, even tho I have fixed my own a few times (with the wonderful, friendly help from the people of this forum, of course )

I guess you can close this topic now. I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused. But, thank you for telling me how to operate ZIP files on XP... will come in quite handy when I order my new computer.

Sorry to hear that Sheila, cause she didn't have any serious infections, just a few minor ones. There was no need to take it to a shop, but it's her computer and her decision, oh well..

Here are some tips you can pass on to her to maintain a clean computer.

Now you should go get a firewall. Don't rely on the Windows firewall as it monitors only incoming traffic. Pick one of these, they are all free.

Zonealarm
Sygate

Visit Windows Update regularly to get the latest security updates.You can also enable automatic updates.Your antivirus software and antispyware programs should also be updated regularly. Make a habit of running scans on a timely basis. Be careful about what you download, scan every file before clicking on it.

Additional programs to consider:

Spywareblaster Prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.Blocks spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.Restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Spywareguard An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware!
IE/Spyad
Adds a list of malicious sites to your Restricted Sites Zone.
Firefox An alternate browser safer than IE
