Hello Milkdudmuffin!
What are the specs of your PC?
Have you closed all background tasks?
Have you got the latest hardware drivers installed?
Have you run a virus/spyware scan? (just in case)

yeah I've done all that, and i believe that my system requirements are adequate, seeing as I could run the game normally months before these crashes occurred?

Does it crash on any other games?
Have you downloaded any hacks?

oh ok silly me, well I couldn't quite figure out everything but here's what I came up with
Compaq Presario
AMD athlon XP 2200+
1.80 GHz, 224 MB of RAM
S3 graphics ProSavageDDR
is this everything?

A few things have come to light.
The first thing is that the S3 savage is not supported by the game and the second thing is that you only have 224MB RAM, the game requires a minimum of 256MB.

Best thing for you to do is to upgrade your graphics card.
What was wrong with the old Nvidia card? Anything we can help with?
The game would run faster if you had more RAM.

yeah i went to update my nvidia card, after someone suggested this might help the game. the instructions at the site to uninstall the old one before installing the new. i uninstalled it and went to install the update. after downloading, the nvidia setup started and a window popped up saying that it couldn't find any compatible components in my windows. or something to that effect, i'm not at home right now so i can't be specific. and then the setup just quits. i've tried installing it 3 or 4 different times but i kept getting that window

Well if you download the latest drivers and it said that it couldn't find compatible components then it's probably quite old.
I think it's time you started seriously thinking about a new graphics card.
