Hello all,

My first post here. To the best of my ability I have followed the directions on what to do before posting when you suspect an infection. Winfixer/winantispyware still runs rampant whenever I loosen up on my sygate firewall. It even launched firefox on its own. CW shredder keeps having a "memory cannot be written" error at login. Ewido keeps finding pmkhh.dll "spyware.virtumonde". Thank you for your help in advance and for maintaining this valuable resource.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

• Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
• In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
• Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
• Expand the "Tools" menu.
• Click "Resident".
• Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
• In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

Yes, sorry I should have been more specific. The "send error report" message is in regards to CW shredder. I was under the impression that CW shredder was a run-once type of app that needed you to reboot once to complete its tasks and then was over with - so that's not the case? when I ran it for the first time it found stuff, needed to reboot the machine (so I went along) and the "memory can't be written" and "send error report" happen ever since. I feel like I must have something else running that is getting in the way.

go ahead and totally delete it off your system and do the following:

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if the main link does not work) and install it. Please Do not run yet.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.


Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Open up and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido


Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!


Please post the Active scan log, Ewido Log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hello again -

I screwed up and ran cleanup! before running ewido. Also, I had installed ewido a little while ago, just hitting "yes" and "I accept" along the way, so I don't know if the options you told me about are accessable - I saw one option about the "guard" but it wasn't "backround guard". Seems like good software though - i'll probably end up switching to it.

Activescan found virtumonde.

CW shredder problems went away when I deleted the .exe from the hard drive.

Machine seems happy, perhaps a little faster. I'm ready to see this through to the clean end.

I'm going to try actually FOLLOWING your directions tomorrow night and I'll post again.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

1. Please download LSPFix from here.
2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
4. In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of mdnsnsp.dll
5. Select every instance of mdnsnsp.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
6. When you are done click Finish>>.
7. Reboot and please post a fresh HiJackThis log.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Here's a catch - I ran Activescan today and it finds virtumonde on my machine still, even though regsrch did not, and neither did ewido's registry scan. I guess the hjt log didn't indicate it either... I'll go to the other free scans you mentioned and see if they find anything....

It seems activescan was on the money. Question: Did sweeper just remove virtumonde totally, or only the symptoms of the infection?
