Hi - Thanks in advance for the help. I seem to have several problems going on at once. I am getting numerous pop-ups for WinFixer 2005, Win Antispyware 2005, Dr. Watson's Postmortem Debugger, and trafficexplorer.com. IE is freezing very often, often when either switching back and forth from multiple windows, or when using the BACK button. Sometimes the whole computer freezes up and needs to be restarted. On about three occasions today, I have had a huge number of successive IE windows open up spontaneously, each with "Cannot Find Server" errors. I have gone through all of the steps in the "read this first" post. All of the steps went smoothly except CW Shredder. I ran it three times in a row, and each time it said it had removed CWS.Look2Me, then said to re-start. Upon restart, I get error messages that CW Shredder encountered a problem and had to close. Finally I gave up on this and moved to the next step. (BTW, in case this info is useful, I have a Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP and use Norton Internet Security.) Below is my HijackThis log. Thanks again for taking the time to help me!

Hello Lisa and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and double-click on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press Enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the file path as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedd.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second file path as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddeeg.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedd.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close HiJackThis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi - Thank you so much for taking the time to help. I am not positive, but I think my computer is what you referred to as a family PC -- when it boots up, we choose either my user name or my husbands, and it loads personal settings. I haven't started following the instructions yet because I'm not sure if this information alters what you need me to do. (Sorry -- I would have included that info in my original post if I knew it was relevant!) Let me know what you need me to do next. Thanks!

Hello Lisa

Please continue with the fix under the same logon that produced the HJT log. I will check your husband's when yours is clean.

Hello again Lisa

Of course I have a sense of humour; you have to have one to live in England.

Not much to concern yourself with from Hubby's ID.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Ordinarilly, that would suffice and I would declare your PC clean, however, if I go back to your opening gambit, you mentioned VX2 and Dr Watson debugger. I have seen no evidence of either, but to be safe, I would like you to logon as yourself and run this.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hello again Lisa

VX2 is negative on your PC, however, there are two files which are bad, left over from a Vundo infection, prior to the one I found. Something/somebody deleted the file without getting rid of the backward files, always produced by Vundo.

Please use Winows Explorer to locate these two

C:\WINDOWS\System32\bcbeg.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bcbeg.ini2

and delete them both.

Please reboot normally. Anything peculier happening? Any pop-ups or pop-unders?

Hi again,

I tried to do as instructed, but I couldn't find those files anywhere. I looked in the System 32 folder, but they weren't there. I also searched the computer for these files, but to no avail.

So far everything appears to be working well on the computer --- no pop-ups, and Internet Explorer is not freezing up as it had been. You are obviously a genius!

Let me know if there's anything further I need to do.

Thanks so much,

Lisa

I am sorry to disappoint, but I assure you I am no genius.

The two files may appear if you "show all files"

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Other than that, I think I can say...................

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Lisa and Hubby!
