Win32.Trojan.Agent.cs ...All fixes tried
I've had this trojan come up in Ad-Aware for some time. WinFixer has been showing up too (but not since trying all of the fixes you recommend).
Still have the trojan, though.
Downloaded ewido last (it keeps finding a trojan, says it will clean, then later finds it again...like ad-aware)
-Ran TrojanHunter, CWShredder, and CLeanup.

Many thanks...am about to wipe this system, but I'll try this first!

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks, Sam. Good to have you helping me. I sure would rather fix this than wipe the machine.

I put the download of Hijackthis into a c:\hijackthis directory, unzipped it, and ran it from there, after a reboot.

Here's the log, and thanks again,
-Tmmurphy

Doesn't look like we've quite got it yet.
I apologize, but there's one (only one) way that I went off course in following your instructions: at the end of Cleanup!, it said 'could not remove all files because some were in use, would you like to log off and on so files can be removed' (my paraphrasing). I know you said not to reboot when offered, but I wasn't sure about logging off/on but did it anyway. Just thought you should know, in case that's why some files remain. Also, the fundofix.txt file had a first line about file not being able to be removed in it. I thought that might be from a few days ago when I was trying to run that program without actually contacting you (shame on me!). I deleted that line, then thought better of it and tried to type it in...again, what remains is my paraphrasing, but may be from an earlier running of vundofix.

Here's the logs. Thanks again....this is all for me tonight. I promise to follow directions To The Letter next time (I was close this time!?)
thx
-Tom

I only got half of your log so I can't tell if the infection is still active or not. But let's do a little cleaning up.

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\crftp.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\Registration\__delete_on_reboot__mcwave.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\Web\__delete_on_reboot__srvdvd.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\Web\__delete_on_reboot__xmlcmd.dll

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Thanks, Sam-
I ran 'killbox' with the deletions pasted from your post, and after reboot, here is my new 'HijackThis' log.
How'm I looking?

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

Sam- thanks for hanging in with me. I'm pretty sure I still 'have it'...just got a window trying to open, but remained blank titled: 'you have spyware'.

I followed the instructions to the letter. The only thing that didn't go as listed in them is that after 'KillVundo.bat' and then it running 'HijackThis' and closing it, the remaining screen from 'killvundo' didn't respond to 'any key' only return, and that just closed it. No Blue Screen of Death. So, I restarted the computer at that oint.

Otherwise, everything went OK except that 'Killvundo' and 'Hijackthis' didn't seem to wipe out what we aimed them at. Here's the logs:

VundoFix may not have extraced properly. Delete the VundoFix folder and download the program again. Then follow the same steps that I posted before.

If we don't get it this time I'll have to call in reinforcements. :tazz:

Hi Sam...
Here's the report. I think this one is a real bugger :tazz:

Again, hope you hang in there, or bring in the bomb squad.
thanks!
-tm

To note what's going un with VundoFix:
I did download a fresh copy and unzip it.
When it finishes (after Hijackthis, really) it comes up saying
"press enter to reboot the computer", so it's like it knows that 'any key' isn't going to reboot it.
-I pressed 'enter' ('any key' didn't do a thing). I think it needed two 'enter's to reboot, but then, *most interesting thing*:
Just as the reboot started, more text popped up on the Vundo screen, just for a split second, it said something like
"a file critical to VundoFix is missing...." and then that's all I could read before the reboot.
-For your reference, the files in the 'Vundo' folder are:
KillVUndo.bat
ReadMe.txt
Starthjt.vbs
Vundo.reg
Vundofix.txt (but I suppose that's the log)
-anything missing?

Here's the .txt log in there, then the other logs following:

It looks we got it on that round! :tazz:
Now let's just clean up a little bit.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as fix.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A9571378-68A1-443D-B082-284F960C6D17}]

Now Locate and DoubleClick fix.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZNxmk500YYUS

Here are some optional fixes you can make with Hijackthis. They are not malware. These are programs that run automatically at startup. They are not necessary to be run at every startup and hog your computer's resources. Fixing these will improve boot up time and performance.

Reboot and post one more hijackthis log so we can be sure it didn't come back. How are things working on your end? Any problems?

Sam-
Glad we're looking good!

Here is that (final?) log.
I ran Reg.fix ahd then 'fixed' all of the items (including the optional) in Hijackthis.
Here's hoping!

Your log is clean! :tazz:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
