Hi all. Any help with this much appreciated. Have run all programs (Ewido/Spybot/etc) as prescribed, but Norton is still finding hacktool.rootkit and is unable to delete from remon.sys

Please help me! Been trying to sort for ages, and it's driving me mad!

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory. Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis and download and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

Once you have Hijackthis running from a permanent folder, please reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Click Start -> My Computer
Select Tools -> Folder options
Select the View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.

For more info on how to show hidden files click here.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Once in Safe mode, delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

Please delete these files.

Now let's remove those leftover services.

Open notepad and copy and paste this text in it:

sc config mousebm start= disabled
sc stop mousebm
sc delete mousebm
sc config ssl start= disabled
sc stop ssl
sc delete ssl
sc config TESV start= disabled
sc stop TESV
sc delete TESV
sc config wpa start= disabled
sc stop wpa
sc delete wpa
sc config Zonelaps start= disabled
sc stop Zonelaps
sc delete Zonelaps

Save this as remjob.bat , choose to save it as *all files and place it on your desktop.

Doubleclick on remjob.bat. A doswindow will open and close again, this is normal.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. Let me know how things are working for you now. Any problems?

Thanks once again for you help and persistence Sam.

First file ( C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\pinstall.dll ) was not there, but I deleted the other two.

During this period, I was getting the following warnings/pop-ups from Norton AV:

w32.Esbot.C found in C:\WINNT\system32\.exe (auto deleted)

w32.Spybot.UOL in C:\WINNT\system32\qsecue.exe (also auto deleted)

The first of these (w32.Esbot.C) is still popping up from time to time... Seems like there might still something lurking :tazz:

Edited to say: have also just had this Virus Alert pop-up as well:

Sorry Sam - have had a few more virus alerts pop-up :tazz:

Norton found, then auto-deleted these:

W32.Spybot.Worm in C:\WINNT\system32\setup_03334.exe
W32.Spybot.Worm in C:\WINNT\system32\setup_73768.exe

Ewido found and cleaned:

file: setup_18744.exe
path: C:\WINNT\system32
Infection: Backdoor.SdBot.aad

Norton then found, and auto-deleted:

W32.Spybot.Worm in C:\WINNT\system32\gblvk.exe

But now - Norton is constantly throwing up virus alerts:

w32.Esbot.C found in C:\WINNT\system32\.exe
&
Hacktool.Rootkit in C:\WINNT\system32\remon.sys
both of which show: Access to file denied. Unable to repair this file.

(Hacktool.Rootkit showed up after ewido found and cleaned:
mswin.pif in C:\WINNT\system32, infection: Backdoor.Rbot)

Any ideas?! Also, some web-pages are showing http 404 when they don't on other computers, plus certain parts/frames of some pages will not load (displays an 'Action Cancelled' message).

Sorry to keep throwing more stuff at you!

Please follow all instructions as specified. Print these instructions to ensure all are followed.

Please download the following programs, but do not run them yet:

* rdrivRem.zip

Unzip it to your desktop.

* Ewido Security Suite

Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
After the updates are installed exit Ewido.

* CleanUp!

Install it.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode" then hit enter.

1.) Please go into the rdrivrem folder and double-click rdrivRem.bat to run the program - follow the instructions on the screen. After it's complete, rdriv.txt will be created in the rdrivRem folder.

2.) Double-click the Ewido Security Suite icon to run the program.

Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan
Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

Click Save report
Save the report to your desktop
Exit Ewido

3.) Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
**If it asks if you want to reboot or log off press NO.

4.) After Cleanup! is finished, run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

O23 - Service: Microsoft SSL (ssl) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\ssl.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: TASKESV (TESV) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\taskcntr.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Windows Product Activation (wpa) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\wpa.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: AntiSpyUltra (Zonelaps) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\vsmom.exe (file missing)

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot your computer into normal mode.

5.) Make sure your firewall is on. Make sure you can turn it off then turn it back on and that nothing is greyed out.
Also, Make sure your Anti-Virus program is working properly - you can turn on and off auto-protect, etc.

6.) Run BOTH of these online virus scans (NOT at the same time!):
ActiveScan
TrendMicro's HouseCall - check "Auto Clean"

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the contents of rdriv.txt, the log from Ewido, the log from ActiveScan, and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

No problem at all. I'm glad to help out. :tazz:

Let's see if we can get rid of those services again.

Click Start -> Run -> (type) services.msc

Scroll down and find the service called Mouse Button Monitor When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button(if available), then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok. Repeat the same steps with these services also.

Microsoft SSL
Windows Product Activation
AntiSpyUltra
TASKESV

Run Hijackthis and click on Open the Misc Tools section -> Delete an NT Service
Copy and paste this into the text box and click OK.

Repeat that step with these also.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log. How is Norton acting now? Any problems?

Ok... Thanks again Sam.

Did everything as instructed. Upon rebooting, Microsoft AntySpyware Beta1 raised the following alert:

Windows Hosts File alert
Occurred on: 29/09/2005 at 10:17:14
The entry zrap.zdnet.com.com pointing to IP address 127.0.0.1 has been automatically been denied permission to be added to the Windows Hosts file. This Hosts file change was blocked based on your previous input.

This was before dial-up/connection.

Upon connection, Norton keeps bringing up, then autodeleting:
w32.Esbot.C found in C:\WINNT\system32\.exe

Just a quick thought: I have now got Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot, Ewido, Spysweeper (and possibly more!) on auto-protect. Is there any chance any of these could 'cancel each other out'? Sorry for my ignorance... :tazz:

Those are all good programs, but you're right, they don't need to all be running in the background. If you have the full version of Spysweeper I would keep it running real time protection and only the others as needed.

Did we ever determine what this is?

Well, I believe it's a small piece of script put in by the guy that networked the computer a couple of years back. Should be ok - it opens a window stating the following:

C:\>net use z: \\server\workfiles

Can you run a scan with Spysweeper and post the log from it's scan?

I still want to figure out why Norton keeps picking up on w32.Esbot.C
