My desktop wallpaper is gone and has been replaced with a blue screen and the words "your system is infected" I downloaded and ran ms antispyware which found a lot of spyware but didn't fix the desktop. Then I installed msconfig and ran it. I found a couple of items in startup that were launching some program that kept two red "x" circles on the bottom right of the taskbar. Those are now gone. I seem to be able to run normally but I can't change the display settings to get rid of this wallpaper. To make matters worse, I was clicking around with the display settings... (I know... a bad idea without parental supervision) and un-checked "show icons" on the desktop properties. Now I can't get back to the properties to turn them back on!
