My computer was attacked yesterday. I downloaded Microsoft anti-spyware, and ran spybot and ad aware and used hijack this to get rid of some things with the advice of a friend. Everything seemed back to normal but today it's back. H E L PPPPPPP

Hi Gack and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Close Ewido, we will use this later.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mad.dll

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Now open and run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

12. Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

13. Run the program CleanUp!

14. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

15. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

I started in safe mode, ran Hijack This and fixed 020 - AppInit_DLLs:mad:dll

When I tried to delete C:\WINDOWSsystem32\mad.dll it wouldn't let me. I got a message saying another user or program was using it. I tried rebooting in safe mode and deleting but it didn't help.

I wasn't sure whether i should go on with the rest of the instructions or not. I ran Smitrem.exe. It didn't seem to find anything, and it didn't allow me to close the window when it finished. I gave up at that point.

Where do I go from here?

Gack

BTW, I wanted to mention that your instructions are written very clearly. Thanks!

Hi Excal,

I ran through everything I could. The panda scan wouldn't run. I got this message:

An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are:

Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded.

Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,...

I did click to allow the download, and I didn't get disconnected from the internet.

Anyway, here are the other logs:

Hi there,

Was I supposed to hit enter after del mad.dll?

I figured I was. I got this message: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

This is a particularly nasty creature, isn't it?

Here's the hijack log.

Go ahead and do this - we're going to see if we can use command prompt to rename the infected file.

please copy these instructions and paste them into notepad for use while in safe mode

Please reboot your computer into safe mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Start > Run

Type in: cmd

Click OK.

Please copy the following line and paste it into the black window:

CD C:\Windows\system32

Hit enter.

It will go to the next line, then copy this line and paste it in:

rename mad.dll mad.old

Hit enter.

then type

del mad.old

then enter.

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: mad.dll

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

reboot and post a fresh hijackthis log. If this doesn't work, going to think about a cruise missle!

Bring on the cruise missles!!!

When I tried to rename, I got the message The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I don't know if this is relevant, but... Yesterday someone tried to help me get rid of the virus. He installed Norton Anti-Virus. Since then, every time I boot up, I get alittle Microsoft installer window, then some error message about the Norton. If you think it's relevant, I'll reboot and let you know exactly what it says.

So what do we do now?

Thanks

eeekk. If you can do me a favor and not try anything out side of what we are doing as it might put us back at sqaure 1. I would really appreicate it. You may have a bad install of norton because of the infection on your machine. I am not sure at this point. If you could get me the error message that would be awesome :tazz:

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at or above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Please download the Killbox.

Please run Killbox.
  • Select "Replace on Reboot".(Please make sure "Use Dummy" box is checked)
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\Windows\system32\mad.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..
  • Let the system reboot.
Upon reboot. Please open kill box. Go to the File pull down menu and "delete all Dummie Files"

Reboot and please post a fresh HiJackthis log

Hi there,

I home you are still there - I just woke up.

When I boot, I get a Windows installer message, then I get the following: Norton Anti-Virus doesn't support the repair feature. Please uninstall and reinstall.

Going to try follow your instructions......

I copy/pasted into Notepad and saved as you instructed. When I double clicked on it, nothing happened.

There were no extra spaces. By default, it saves as ANSi. Is that ok? I can't think of anything else that would stop it from working. :tazz:

Not sure what you mean. The file needs to be saved as a .reg file and make sure its saved as "all Files".

Extra piece of info...

The fact that I don't get that merge message is something to do with my computer, not with how I saved the file.

A friend followed your instructions on his computer and did get the merge prompt (he didn't merge, of course).

He emailed me the file. When I opened it, I didn't get the prompt. And when I right-click on the file, the first option is Open, not Merge.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help
