I am so happy I stumbled on this website -- I realy hope you wonderful people can help me! My mother in law's computer is plagued with browswer hijacks to inappropriate websites, and I really want her not to be exposed! I have attached my log file.

Before we can help your mother-in-law, you will need to help us.

The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

I just realized I should have replied within the same thred. I am learning, here. i really appreciate the patience. You are great!

I posted a few days ago, I'm helping my mother-in-law with her PC. The direction I was given was to install Windows Update. Well, I (accidentally) installed Service Pack 2, even though I was specifically instructed to install SP1a. I'm so sorry. Not sure what to do now.

My problems are some foreign Google website about George Bush idiot, ads.clickagents.com popups, oldgames.se popups/hijacks and I think lots of other popups that Yahoo Toolbar is blocking, becuase it's very slow. Should I disable that so I really know what's going on?

Since then, I have read the complete list of what to do before posting HJT log, ran Ad-aware (only one critical error!), with all the right things checked, downloaded and ran Spybot. The Scotty Dog, and Spy Bloaster is also running on my machine. Also, I have Symantec and the latest virus definitions. I took it upon myslef (gosh I hope I don't regret this) to disable a few things from Startup that i thought looked very suspect from Scotty's log.

The good news is I may have gotten rid of Free6 popup, which is wonderful. Not sure what I did but it hasn't come up lately.

Here is my logfile. I will be so excited to hear what I should do, and how I repair my dumb mistake with the Windows Update. (Honestly, I don't think it really gave me a choice, I think i just accepted the defaults and let BillG/Windows do "its thing" to my machine!

I want to get really good at this and help other people, but for now I have...

Reboot after doing so, preferably into safe mode and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mswin.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?[bleep].exe <= Make sure to get the file that actually has a question mark in it's name. Do NOT delete everything a Find Files results in.
winupdate2date.exe
c:\ied_s7.cab
c:\x.cab

Some files may already be gone so dont worry if you can't find some of them

Post back with a new log.

Thank you so much Pieter!
I did exactly like you said, and you're right, some files were not there, so I was not able to remove them. All 15 of the items in the HKT list were there and I checked them and did fix checked.

But only the first one of the files was there of the ones below.

Here is a fresh log.
