Hi

I'm back, this time with a laptop problem.
The laptop is my sisters and for some reason it is running slow.
I have tried all the "You must read this before posting a hijackthis log", and it has quickened but not what it used to be.

The hijack this log is below.

Thanks again

Wayne

Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have on your system?

Let's do this:

First, download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, if it does go ahead and reboot.

Then, please download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into Safe Mode, you can do this by restarting your computer, then contiunally tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
  • Now open Ewido Security Suite.
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Save the results from ActiveScan.

I need you to post the log from Ewido and the log from ActiveScan.

Hi Michelle

Sorry for the delay but it has taken all day to run the Active scan.
From system properties I found the RAM to be 256Mb

Here are the reports;

Cheers.

Can you please tell me what other files are in this folder:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\BTOW Shared Files

Also, this is to help speed up the computer:

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Kim\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\EEHS88HK\HijackThis[1].exe

Right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

These are optional items that can be removed from startup to free system resources. My comments are in red.

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe <-Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets Available via Start > Control Panel.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe <-Dell taskbar icon.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER <- tray icon for RealPlayer. Can be started from Start > All Progams.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background <-Tray icon for Windows Messenger. Can be started from Start > All Programs.

O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe <-Installed with the software for Logitech products. Automatically checks for software upgrades AND new products, services and special offerings from Logitech. Not needed on startup.

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot your computer and see if it's running any faster.

Hi again

I think there is a slight improvement

The only other file in the folder is;
webctrlwevents.ddl.

On reboot the computer took 1min 12 sec to reach Start up screen
1min 20 sec to reach Welcome screen
1 min 55 sec to reach Desktop
3 min 55 sec to usable ie the egg timmer changes to an arrow and the flashing light indicating that the laptop is 'working' goes out.

Programs are still taking a while to open up.
Because my sister doesn't have many programs on the laptop I tried Microsoft Works word processor. It took 24 seconds to open fully. On my PC it takes approx 4 secs.

I am also getting a Windows security message

"Your computer might be at risk
No firewall is turned on
Click this balloon to fix the problem"
When I click the balloon it is saying that the firewall is swiched on. Don't understand.

The icons on the desk top are flashing a few times on startup.

Cheers

Open Ewido
Click Quarantine on the left side.
Look for the following item:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\BTOW Shared Files\btwebcontrol.dll

Click to highlight it then click Restore

A small window will open up. Click Restore on this one as well.

This does not appear to be a malware issue. We'll try to find out what is causing it to run so slowly.

Go to Start > Run

Type firewall.cpl and make sure it is on with nothing grayed out (where you can't change it).

Firewall.cpl is on and I have restored

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\BTOW Shared Files\btwebcontrol.dll.

It did say that this was high risk dialer.Generic. Is that OK?

Cheers

It's what we call a false-positive. Ewido just thinks it's a dialer, but it actually belongs to her ISP. :tazz:

I will be back as soon as possible!

Go to start > run and type msconfig

Click the Services tab.
Put a check next to Hide All Microsoft Services
Then please take a screenshot of this window for me.
You can do this by holding the Ctrl key and pressing the PrintScreen key.
Then go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint
In Paint, go up to Edit > Paste
Then Go up to File > Save As. Click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "JPEG", name it what you want, and save it where you want.

Then click Add Reply in this topic, and click the "Browse" button. Locate the file you just saved, click on it, then click "Open". Click Add This Attachment.

Please do the same thing for the Startup tab in msconfig. (You can attach both images into one post)

Thank you :tazz:

Hi Michelle

I have done what you asked for. The reason for posting two startups is because the window wouldn't open enough to show the contents in one go, but they are all there now. I'm still getting the windows Firewall warning.

Cheers

Let's check to make sure your firewall is set to start automatically.

Go to Start > Run and type services.msc
Click OK.
Scroll down and look for:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
Double-click it.
Under the General tab, make sure it is started and the "Startup type" is set to automatic.

Then, this may take a little while (and a lot of rebooting) to figure out what may be the problems causing the system to be so slow...

Go to Start > Run and type msconfig
Click the Services tab and UNcheck both ewido security suite services
Click Apply, click OK

Reboot your computer and see if it's still performing as badly.

Hi

Unfortunately there is no change speed wise.

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing "Startup type" was already set to automatic.

On start up I got the attached message. Do I accept?

Cheers
