I usually hook peoples hard drives up in my desk top to get their stuff off of it before I reinstall the OS. I've never done a lap top hard drive though. Is it any different?

Yep, if you want to hook a laptop drive up to a desktop, you will need either a converter to allow you to connect it to a standard IDE cable or an external 2.5in USB caddy.
I would recommend the caddy personally
