I've been able to play dvds for years, but all of a sudden an error message comes up.

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

It's always worked before and I can't afford to buy a dvd decoder right now.

when you purchased your computer/dvd player, it likely came with some software to play it--powerdvd, for example.

Reinstall that, it will reinstall the dvd-encoder/decoder allowing WMP to play movies
