Toshiba laptop running painfully slow. Ran through the "required steps" (no major issues) and more problems began (continuous memssage at start up from Ewido re: "Virtumonde" despite "clean" request); "windows installer preparing to install" message; and trying to configure Read and Write 7. Ran HijackThis and have log.

Currently running 69 processes and have a lot of Toshiba-installed garbage on the machine I would like to nix.

In case it is important, the laptop is networked on a home network.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and uncheck GUARD.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and double-click on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.

• After you have fixed these items, close HiJackThis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hello Crustyoldbloke and thank you for helping me out. It took about 25 minutes to get move Hijackthis and to disable Ewido (I told you it was slow), but I was only given the option to uncheck "realtime guard" and "shutdown guard." I unchecked both.

Due to speed issues, I downloaded VundoFix to a flash and moved it to the laptop. After rebooting into safe mode, I was asked which operating system (no choice but to select Windows XP). Windows launched in safe mode and gave me the option of admin or me. Selecting Admin, I proceeded to option VundoFix and double-clicked the batch file. The screen went black with "Safe Mode" in the four corners and "Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 9" written at the top. I used Ctrl-Alt-Del to sign off and sign on again and got to this same point. Suggestions?

Try the fix in normal mode, it will mostly work OK.

okay, crustyoldbloke, I am in the midst of it and have a question. A window popped up just as HijackThis was opening....Norton AntiVirus has halted the computer until I respond re: a Windows Script Host Shell Object (starthjt.vbs). It recommends I stop the script but gives other options. What should I do?

Ok. Message says Hijack opened, please fix...etc. BUT icons on screen gone and Hijack has not opened. I will reboot and run HJT, then reboot again and proceed with the above instructions.

Crustyoldbloke, the wierdness continues. After completing the above, I rebooted to check speed (not much change). Unfortunately, the system revealed another mystery that I experienced twice before (in the last few days). Suddenly, web browser pages started launching but they couldn't connect. The last two times, I turned off my wireless connection and the launching stopped but not before 40-50 pages opened. This time, I turned off the wireless and got a message asking if I wanted to view it offline. I closed the window and the web browsers started opening again. It got to 58 pages before I was able to stop it. I was able to catch some of the word flashing across the header.

OK, the error message from Vundofix is telling me that you do not have Administrator's rights. Go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>USER ACCOUNTS. Check to see what accounts are logged. Delete all others (save the files to desktop option) and then ensure your logon has administrator's rights. Reboot and try the fix again without the online scan.

The online scan is only pointing to the Vundo infection. HJT log is only pointing to the Vundo infection.

Once Vundo is gone, I'll have an in depth look at your PC. If malware is not your problem, I'll pass you over to the appropriate forum for fixing.

You might wish to try this now though.

Run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

After the SFC scan, try the fix again, but to be safe, delete the Vundofix you have already have and download a fresh copy just in case the first one was/is corrupted.
