This is exausting and time consuming!! I ran SFC, deleted Vundo, and reran the fix. However, I now cannot get a window to open from you website to get a new copy of Vundo or to launch activescan (not a pop-up issue - I turned that off). I did pull a new copy of Vundo over on a flash and accessed that through the Start menu while in safe mode. Cleanup was already downloaded yesterday. No luck getting activescan. This new limitation on opening windows also prevents me from accessing "my assistant" in geekstogo.

Here are the reults. I will reboot now.

Hello again. I am really sorry that you are having so many problems. I am trying to help you as best I can, based upon your HJT logs and what you tell me. Malware affects PC's differently and it is very frustrating sometimes, but always time consuming.

Currently, your HJT log is only showing one error. Hpefully we can take care of that, but I doubt that your PC will be much improved afterwards.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: olemc - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\olemc.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and delete it:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\olemc.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

In view of the problems you have, if it is at all possible, please try this as I wish to look deeper into your system.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Crustyoldbloke,

I appreciate your help and I know this is a huge undertaking - working like this - without the PC in front of you, especially when it is acting this wierd. Thanks.

So, to get on with the saga...at what point do you just scrap the hard drive and start over? Is there a possibility that this malware is embedded in my documents, so that if I moved them via the flash, they would infect another PC? My laptop is strictly for email, surfing, and word/powerpoint - things that a mom who volunteers does. I have moved my critical files (word, powerpoint, email address book, etc.) to another computer which is now side by side with my laptop, so I can respond to you on one while working on another.

Earlier, the laptop would not boot - I turned it on and 15 minutes later is was still on the welcome screen. Task manager showed no activity. When I rebooted, I got a message that "explore.exe not responding." Then, rebooting into safe mode, it locked at the black screen that had safe mode in the four corners. A third reboot into safe took me into safe, where I searched and could not find the file (I had fixed it at HJT yesterday after the report was saved - habit already, I guess - I was following the fix-it rules from before).

I am currently trying to perform the WinPFind...I will let you know how that goes.

Here is the winpfind log. Waiting for the "ah ha" moment....

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again

I will try to answer your questions as best I can. I normally reckon a hard drive is good for around 10,000 hours give or take. An early sign of a hard drive giving up the will to live is random shut-downs and rebooting problems.

Malware (malicious software) can be called anything the writer chooses it to be, but most of it has a commercial benefit and therefore fits a pattern. It is not usual for malware to hide in "My Documents".

The black screen safe mode is currently being investigated by our staff members, since we have come across many instances of this new symptom.

I can only advise you on malware related topics, I must stand aside on hardware topics since there are many staff members more expert than I in our hardware forum.

Looking at your WinPfind log, there are four files to be zapped.

Please download:
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\cmelo.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\cmelo.ini
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\cmelo.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\cmelo.tmp

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Is it running any better now?

I am in reboot right now, but thought you should know that, again, I could not open the link in geekstogo, so I brought over the download via flash. The link, however, took me directly to the .exe file which opened Pocket Killbox. Despite the clipboard paste, only one file showed up, so I added each separately (said no to reboot and went back to add the next file).

The reboot did not take as long (6 minutes), but opening explorer is still slow.

It doesn't sound promising. One final attempt before letting you loose on the hardware forum.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and I will take another look.

Hello again

Looking at your last HJT log, it is fairly clean. By that I mean that a purist might wish to uninstall both Viewpoint (considered foistware) and Interactual Player (reports back your activities), I mean that there is no malicious software present.

Logically, I must conclude that your problem is not malware related.

I think that leaves the possibility of both hardware and software. Since I have attempted to rectify your OS (Win XP with System File Scan) and that made little if any difference, I would check hardware next.

I wish you well. I only wish that I could have been of more help to you.

Please go to out hardware forum and post a description of your problem there:

http://www.geekstogo...pherals-f9.html

Kind regards.
