I have some sort of virus. I tried everything on your initial consult page. Several Items were cleaned up, but when I rebooted after the final step in the process, the Windows installer tries to install something. Norton will not allow it to be installed. I am sending the Hijackthis file. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to GTG.

Does it say what it's trying to install? Did you install anything new before this problem occurred? How about uninstalling a program?

Your log is clean. So I think it might be a software conflict problem. If you can get the name of the program, you might want to try reinstalling it.

I believe a program is hidden within and trying to get installed to my computer. I an attaching a word file showing the screen of my shutdown page. It is a shield with microsoft colors on the edge of the red turnoff button. Below the 3 option buttons, there is the same shield that says"Click Turn Off to install important updates and turn off your computer. Click here to turn off without installing updates. In the lower right tool bar, there is a gold shield similar to Norton. I believe it is trying to make me think it is Norton. When I click it the "Automatic Update" screen comes up. See attached file"automatic updates".
Should I unplug my connection and disable norton and see what file is trying to install?
Thank you for your response.

Does Ewido find anything when ran in Safe Mode?

Does Norton have a firewall also? If the one you have doesn't have one, then get one here. Look for the Free Download link. Install it and run it.

Restart your computer and make sure ZoneAlarm is running. Close out Norton and see how it goes. Does that screen still come up?

I ran Ewido in safe mode and it found 5 more threats. I will copy and paste here.

As far as the firewall, I think that I already have one. If I go to control panel and then click on Security Center - which also has the shield with the windows colors as the icon - this is what I see (See attached word file with screen shot). It says that the firewall is on. I could not find the free download for the other firewall at Zone Labs that you mentioned.

I rebooted after running Ewido. The message is still coming up. I suspect that you are right about the conflict issue because the message appears as soon as Norton is fully loaded and the icon appears in the bottom right hand tool bar. However, how do I know if I have fully cleaned my computer. What are your thoughts?

My suggestion is to uninstall Norton completely and use other alternatives (which I have to say is much better). Get ZoneAlarm as your firewall and AVG as your antivirus. Both are free and, in my opinion, work much better than Norton. Make sure you uninstalled Norton before installing those two.

Restart and see if that message still comes up now.

Okay. I downloaded the firewall and the AVG, but have not installed them yet. I went into Add/Remove programs to uninstall Norton and was going fine until I got the following error message - see attached screen shot. Now I don't have the Norton icon or the icon in the bottom right hand of the screen. What do I do now?

Since you had problems uninstalling it, take a look at this site and follow the steps outlined there. Once it's completely removed, install AVG and ZoneAlarm.
