before trying this in another PC, try downloading drivers for an hp dvd writer 400i.

in my computer, please right click on bia and look at properties. and do the same for the cdrom. let's make sure bia is the cdrom and 'cd drive' is really the dvd.

Both the bia and dvd drive are showing up as cd roms.hh.png

When i went to the hp site for the drives for the 400i then have the install disc for the 400i , https://warp2.extern...ricing_info.asp.

And they had a frmware update, http://h10025.www1.h...item=dv-26967-2 , so i downloaded that but it says that theres no drives that support this update.

so the hp dvd writer 400i drivers installed ok, but the firmware did not?

did you try restarting the PC and test the DVD? and have you tested the cdrom since the swapping was done?

it looks like my computer recognizes the dvd drive as a dvd. does it still ask for a disk when you insert one in the dvd?

this is looking like a hardware problem. it might be time to try it in another PC.

hold off on ordering anything from HP, for now.

one other idea - you might try downloading the alcohol120% emulator

Chuckfoo,

upon further review ... here's one link which might help

http://club.cdfreaks...ad.php?t=108610

please do NOT do anything until the dvd drive is tested in another PC. if it still fails, then we might consider lookung more seriously at the link above.

below are some other links(no solutions, however - other than replace the drive)

some info from the pages below:
hp 400i shows up as hp 400c
hp 400i is made by phillips and uses dvdrw824k/40 firmware(we need to verify this)
BenQ might be a good source for firmware

Thanks,

before you spend any money, try the dvd drive in another PC and make sure the symptoms are exactly the same as in your PC.

another thing you could try is borrow a dvd drive from a friend and try it in your PC.

if your dvd drive works in another PC or if another dvd drive fails in your PC, then we can try to edit the registry.

try to give precise details in your next post, especially if anything weird happens.

Ok i got out of louisiana and i found someonewith a computer that he said i could use, so i put the drive in as a master and booted the machine, his machine was also an hp machine so i guess it knew what to do cause it work right when i put it in.

He didnt not have and dvd drive, for me to test in mine. thats all the info i got. i also tryed all those links and everytime i would go to patch it it would say cant find the drive.

registry?i guess or is there more test?
