DVD writer not reading any type of disc

Only thing i can see that it did was chage the way my folder icons look? The dvd drive still says insert disc.

I ended up buying a whole new burner, i got a NEC 16X DVDRW ND-3540A BK W/O SW%, and its working great, thought its a 16x burner and when i burn to 8x dvd-r the fastest i ever got is about 4.1x?
